  • We are thrilled to hear the news that Utah has been chosen to host the 2034 Winter Games! Welcoming the International Olympic Committee gave us a unique opportunity to be a part of history by showcasing Utah's strengths, potential, and Olympic legacy, while also reinforcing Edison House's commitment to excellence and community impact! Among the distinguished speakers were Mayor Erin Mendenhall, Fraser Bullock, president and CEO of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, and Catherine Raney Norman, four-time Olympic Speedskater and chairwoman of the SLC-UT Committee for the Games. Utah has so much to offer and we are incredibly excited for what lies ahead!

As part of our ongoing commitment to innovative programming, The Shrine Series is our latest endeavor to celebrate legendary figures whose influence continues to define art, music, and culture. This December, we kick off the series by paying tribute to Frank Sinatra—a timeless icon whose music and legacy have left an undeniable impact. From his unforgettable voice to the artists he inspired, Sinatra exemplifies the power of expression and creativity. The event will feature live music, storytelling, and artistic collaboration, creating a space for connection, reflection, and celebration. Member Spotlight: Frankie Santos Laanan! Raised in a humble home constructed from corrugated tin and wood on the island of Guam, Frankie Santos Laanan learned the power of education from his parents early on. Now celebrating one year as Dean of the College of Education at the University of Utah, he reflects on his journey with gratitude! Frankie is committed to the university's vision of becoming a top 10 public research institution. His mantra, "Education Equals Societal Impact," drives his work in fostering community growth. He believes in the cumulative effect of education to build resilient communities. And even as the impacts may not always be immediate, he believes "small changes build up to create significant impact over time.” Finding alignment with the inclusive ethos of Edison House, Frankie sees opportunities to forge genuine connections and expand networks that resonate with the college's mission. By fostering authenticity and embracing diversity, he aims to cultivate meaningful collaborations that drive positive change both here in our community, and beyond!"

  • As Pride Month came to a close and we welcomed July, we had the incredible opportunity to sit down with our friends at Goldman Sachs for a meaningful and engaging conversation. Our CEO, George Cardon-Bystry shared his thoughts on the meaning of Pride and the importance of belonging and community within Edison House and Salt Lake City. George's commitment to promoting LGBTQ+ rights and creating a supportive environment was evident as he spoke about his personal journey and the founding of Edison House. His inspiring words left no doubt that we are on the right path! A big thank you to Goldman Sachs, Jill Borst, Stacey Miller, Laura Holleman, Leo Martins, Salma Moosa, and Sabrina McPhearson, MBA for inviting us and sharing your platform. This conversation will hopefully inspire and motivate others to continue having this important dialogue and drive positive change!

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the importance of connection and community. We exist in a time when people feel increasingly alone. And that’s because they are! Over the last 10 years, every age group across varied demographics has experienced a precipitous decline in how often they spend time with friends. There are many reasons for this, but the impact is clear: record-high levels of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.   Herein lies the greatest potential of social clubs. When our members share that they’ve made a meaningful friendship or that the clubhouse has become a home away from home, we feel reenergized. Edison House provides members with a sense of belonging and an opportunity for authentic connection. Whether you're attending one of our events, participating in club activities, or simply working in our shared spaces, Edison House is a supportive environment where you can meet new friends and combat loneliness! Discover the difference that a strong community can make in your life and mental health and check out our website for more information! To read more about trends in social isolation, social engagement, and companionship in the US, this article by Kannan, V. D., & Veazie, P. J. (2023) shared some interesting perspectives on how people of different age groups and races navigate their social communities. https://lnkd.in/d7QZa5Wp
