This year, we proudly promoted Zhiying (Zoey) Yue, PhD, and Michael Carter, PhD, to the role of Scientist, recognizing their outstanding contributions to advancing the Lab’s mission. 🌟 Dr. Yue is making significant strides in understanding how social media and gaming shape the mental, social, and physical wellbeing of young people. Her 2024 Pulse Survey, “Digital Gaming and Social Interaction” highlighted how gaming fosters connection among teens, providing key insights into how these platforms influence social behaviors. Zoey’s work continues to shape our understanding of how technology impacts youth development. 🌟 Dr. Carter is conducting vital research on social media’s role in youth mental health. His 2023 Pulse Survey, “Exploring the Nuances of Young People’s Social Media Use and Experiences” offered groundbreaking insights into how teens navigate platforms in ways that both benefit and challenge their mental health. Michael’s work has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of youth digital experiences. In addition to these achievements, both Zoey and Michael shared their expertise at major conferences, including the International Communication Association Annual Conference, further amplifying the Lab’s work on a global stage. • 📸 Day 7 of our "Top Posts of 2024" series highlights a powerful message from our Research Manager, Sam Schwamm. At the National PTA Thought Leader Convening in Washington D.C., Sam shared findings from our research, emphasizing the importance of parental modeling in setting tech rules for teens, as they view these rules more positively when parents follow them too. Teens whose parents model tech rules report: ✅ Less overall screen use ✅ A lower likelihood of feeling “addicted” to media ✅ Greater acceptance of the rules as appropriately restrictive This insight underscores how vital it is for parents and caregivers to lead by example in fostering healthy digital habits. #DigitalWellness #ParentingInTheDigitalAge #ModelingBehavior #TeenMentalHealth #DigitalParenting #TopPosts2024

“Teens we surveyed viewed rules around tech and media use positively. Many of the parents, according to their teens, were not following the rules themselves. Teens whose parents model the rules are more likely to see those rules as appropriately restrictive, report less overall screen use, and are less likely to report feeling “addicted” to media.” - Sam Schwamm, Research Manager @ the Digital Wellness Lab Look for members of our team in Washington D.C. today at the National PTA Thought Leader Convening where we're presenting on the intersection of the #digital world and student #mental health. • 🎮 Day 6 of our "Top Posts of 2024" series takes us to #PAXEast2024, where the Lab joined a packed room of gamers and parents to discuss "Unlocking the Positive Potential of Gaming for Kids & Teens." Led by the Lab's Research Manager, Sam Schwamm, the panel brought together experts Steph Hoechst (FableVision), Dr. Jason Kahn (Mightier), Chris James (Modulate), and Dr. David Bickham to explore how video games can support youth development while addressing potential risks. The conversation spotlighted: 🎯 THE ROLE OF GAMES AS PLAYGROUNDS Panelists highlighted how video games allow kids to test boundaries, make safe mistakes, and explore identities in ways that mirror real-world developmental milestones. 🎯 EMPOWERING KIDS THROUGH CONTROL Dr. Kahn explained how gaming offers kids something rare: a space where they’re in control, making decisions and excelling independently from adult supervision. Attendees also raised thoughtful questions about VR, in-game spending, and how parents can channel the motivation kids feel while gaming into positive outcomes. The session left us inspired by the potential of gaming to support kids’ growth when approached thoughtfully and intentionally. #PositiveGaming #DigitalWellness #YouthDevelopment #GamingAndKids #PAXEast2024 #TopPosts2024

CAN VIDEO GAMES BE GOOD FOR KIDS? During last week's #PAXEast 2024, a roomful of people took time out of their gameplay to actively engage with our panel, "Unlocking the Positive Potential of Gaming for Kids & Teens". Moderated by the Lab's Research Manager Sam Schwamm, the panel featured a powerhouse team of Steph Hoechst of FableVision, Dr. Jason Kahn of Mightier, Chris James of Modulate, and our own Dr. David Bickham. Two key takeaways: THE IMPORTANCE OF VIDEO GAMES AS PLAYGROUNDS There were finger snaps and audible agreement from the crowd as the panelists shared the importance of games as playgrounds for kids to test boundaries, make safe mistakes, try out identities, and pursue key developmental milestones. VIDEO GAMES PROVIDE A RARE SPACE WHERE KIDS HAVE CONTROL Dr. Jason Kahn noted that video games are a rare space where kids have control — they can't decide whether or not to go to school or what the family will have for dinner, but in a gaming environment, they make the decisions and often know far more than the adults in their lives. Panelists also discussed some of the potential downsides of gaming, such as problematic use, in-game spending, and negative interactions with other players, as well as strategies for parents and other adults to help reduce these risks while encouraging positive gaming experiences. Finally, we answered questions from the audience about the use of VR and how to tap into the motivation that young people have when gaming.

HOW CAN WE PREPARE TODAY'S STUDENTS FOR TOMORROW'S AI APPLICATIONS? The commercial capabilities of #AI and its impact on the future of work for today’s youth was a major topic of conversation at last week's Massachusetts Institute of Technology RAISE #AIEDUSUMMIT2024 attended by the Lab's resident AI-enthusiast Brinleigh Murphy-Reuter. A key takeaway is that AI is here to stay within education. Eric Klopfer's Bloom's Taxonomy-based approached to scaffolding AI literacy/fluency was particularly compelling: 1) Know and understand AI 2) Use and apply AI 3) Evaluate and create AI. It continues to be increasingly important for educators, families, and other caregivers to work to prepare today's students to be critical, thoughtful users of these innovative technologies throughout their education and careers. We place a high value on learning about what’s top-of-mind for other experts in the field and will definitely bring their perspectives back into our work here at the Lab!

“One thing AI can't do is build relationships, build trust. We have to rethink what the right skills are that our children need to be learning.” Andy Moose, Head of Health and Wellness, World Economic Forum “Young people are connected but they're disconnected. They are hyper connected on their devices, but they are alone together. If you think about attention in the age of distraction, if you want to think of a future workforce's success, we need to work on the social emotional skills, resilience, building relationships.“ Dr. Philip McRae, The Alberta Teachers' Association "Human Change and the Future Workforce," the final session at the #HumanChange House's #wef24 initiative brought down the house! The room was packed to the rafters to hear Dr. Michael Rich moderate an all-star panel comprised of Kim Samuel, of the Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness; Andy Moose; Ebru Özdemir, Chairperson of Limak Group of Companies; Lauren Rusckowski Duprey, CHRO at TAKEDA PHARMACEUTICALS AMERICA, INC.; Gaia Bernstein, Seton Hall University School of Law; and Dr. Phil McRae, discussing the impacts they see to the current and future workforce from young people's constant engagement online.
