How are digitalisation and social media changing our children? How will these children as adults shape future society? In a rapidly evolving digital age, the Human Change campaign is dedicated to raising awareness and instigating a transformation in the way our children approach social media and digitalisation of their lives. Digital connections are no substitute for genuine human interactions and can do more harm than good for young developing minds. It’s time to prioritize the well-being of children in our digitally interconnected world. Launching in January 2024 during the World Economic Forum Annual Meetings.

On November 24, Human Change was proud to support Dr. Philip McRae’s participation at the Singapore Youth Forum, a fully student-led event held at UWC South East Asia. The forum was the brainchild of Katie Choynowska, who was inspired to bring meaningful conversations about #digitalwellness and leadership to her peers after visiting Human Change House in Davos earlier this year. Phil joined an impressive lineup of thought leaders, including Professor May Lwin, Dr. Yuhyun Park, and industry experts from Google APAC and GOtyme Bank, to explore critical topics like: 📱 Digital Wellness for Youth 🌟 Shaping Young Leaders in a Digital World Some key takeaways: 🔔 Teens receive an average of 240 notifications daily, driving constant interruptions and social pressure. 💻 Young people spend 3 months a year online—what are they missing in the real world? ⚽ There is a need to prioritise human connection, play, and interpersonal relationships over screens. 🤝 Building boundaries in a boundless digital world can lead to stronger friendships and less pressure among students. Congratulations to Katie and the incredible team behind the Singapore Youth Forum for inspiring such meaningful conversations. This is what youth leadership looks like! 🙌

Gaia Bernstein urges Congress to protect children, not Big Tech. In her latest article for The Hill, Professor Bernstein argues that Congress' recent move to advance a weakened version of the Kid's Online Safety Act (#KOSA) prioritizes the interests of tech companies over children. 🗣 “The Kids Online Safety Act was crafted because social media platforms have created a technology that is addictive — and consequentially harmful for children — by design: the endless scrolling, the intermittent rewards, the dopamine hits.” Now, Congress must choose to pass the strongest version of KOSA if it truly wants to safeguard our children from online harm. 💡 To learn more about KOSA, read her piece: https://lnkd.in/d26z65_3'

New UK legislation hopes to reduce social media’s addictive impact on children. The new bill proposes: ⭐Excluding under-16s from algorithms promoting addictive content; ⭐Requiring a government review into the sale of mobile phones to minors; and ⭐Making #smartphone bans a legal requirement in schools. Josh MacAlister MP, the Labour MP championing the bill, stated that "the evidence is mounting that children doomscrolling for hours a day is causing widespread harm". The bill has received substantial support from MPs from both labour and the Conservatives, alongside child protection experts. As the UK joins a growing global movement addressing concerns around the impact of digitalisation on childhood, Human Change urges governments around the world to take committed actions to protect our children’s wellbeing, development, and future.
