We’re skeptical (in a good way 😉) and data-driven. We’re diverse in focus with the ability to zoom out and see the entire economy. Our deliverables are based in scientific studies without bias, and shared openly to generate a network effect for innovation. Why D^3? Because AI is only half the answer. --- Kara Miller’s overview with Karim Lakhani and Jen Stave, PhD kicks off a showcase series that will dive into the work of our labs and the angles we’re taking to invent the future. #FutureTech #Innovation #BusinessExcellence #DigitalInnovation #BusinessTechnology #AIAdvancements #DigitalTransformation #InnovationInBusiness

(Re)inventing how organizations compete and thrive in the digital world and educating a new generation of leaders
About us
Technological change is reshaping business, the global economy, and societies. The accelerating pace of this change is simultaneously driven by digital, data, and design: • Digital: digitization is happening everywhere, impacting all industries, the world is getting digitized • Data: using data science and AI to analyze all facets of company, economic, and human data produced from digitization • Design: engaging human-centered design to unlock the value of data science and deploy it as a tool Leaders today identify digitization as one of their top three priorities — along with climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Digital, Data, and Design Institute at Harvard (re)invents how organizations compete and thrive in the digital world and educates a new generation of leaders. D^3 (pronounced D-cubed) provides a new architecture for rigorous research, immersive learning, and cutting-edge practice by embracing close partnerships and collaborations with leaders and organizations impacted by digital transformation. Critically, the Institute houses both technical research in data science and machine learning alongside research examining broader business implications, allowing faculty in disparate disciplines to unite around common interests. D^3 is based at Harvard Business School, but seeks to engage and benefit all of Harvard. With 14 labs, 30+ faculty members, and 6 Communities of Practice, D^3 enables companies to be more competitive in the age of AI and generate new organizational models.

With 96% of codebases incorporating Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), open source is the foundation of modern innovation. However, its decentralized nature brings challenges in assessing its security, value, and overall health. The newly released Census III report by Harvard Business School Professor Frank Nagle, Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard Program Manager Kate Powell, and the The Linux Foundation provides a comprehensive analysis of the FOSS ecosystem. It highlights the increasing adoption of cloud-specific tools, ongoing reliance on outdated software, and the critical role of standardization in strengthening software supply chains. The report also sheds light on the sustainability challenges faced by FOSS, with many key projects relying heavily on a small group of contributors. For organizations, the findings underscore the need to invest in open-source sustainability and security while embracing its transformative potential. "Well, first of all, you know, AI development has been going on for more than 70 years, but for most of us, we started to see AI in our mobile phones. Even today, when you use your smartphone and it does facial recognition, you did a little bit of training of a model to help you recognize that. And so it was always in the background in our consumer lives. What's happened is that over the last three or four years, the rise of generative AI systems has really taken hold. And, all of a sudden, AI had its browser moment. Rate of change and improvement of these tools has been incredible." AI has been quietly shaping our lives for decades, but the rise of generative AI has created a true "browser moment" for this technology. 🌐 In a recent episode of Talking Development by the World Bank, Dorothy & Michael Hintze Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School Karim Lakhani shares insights into how AI is transforming industries and everyday life at an unprecedented pace. From facial recognition in our smartphones to advanced generative tools, the rapid evolution of AI is driving change—and opportunities—for individuals, organizations, and governments alike. How is your organization preparing to leverage AI for impact? 🎥 Watch the full episode: https://lnkd.in/ex-xPuWq #AI #Innovation #GenerativeAI #HarvardBusinessSchool #DigitalTransformation

IT spending in 2025 is expected to grow by 10%, driven largely by investments in AI (35-40% growth) and cybersecurity (15% growth), with security comprising up to 20% of overall IT budgets. Cybersecurity priorities focus on identity management, compliance monitoring, and combating advanced threats like malware and software supply chain attacks, with AI and automation increasingly integrated to enhance security functions and mitigate workforce shortages.
