Today, the City of Fremont established a new $100,000 signing bonus* for up to 10 newly hired Lateral Police Officers. The bonus is one of the nation’s largest law enforcement hiring incentive, significantly increasing the City’s current $20,000 Lateral Police Officer signing bonus. In addition to the new hiring incentive, the City has recently established additional hiring incentive programs aimed at improving retention and benefits for existing Police Officers. In recent years the law enforcement profession has experienced a dramatic decrease in applicants and despite the many challenges contributing to the current vacancy rate within our Police Department, the City has been actively implementing measures to overcome this obstacle. *This new bonus is structured with $10,000 provided upon acceptance of a final offer of employment with the City of Fremont; an additional $10,000 paid upon completion of the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program; an additional $15,000 paid upon successful completion of probation; an additional $15,000 paid upon one (1) full year following completion of probation; $15,000 provided upon two (2) years following completion of probation; $15,000 paid upon three (3) years following completion of probation; and the remaining $20,000 paid for completing the final six (6) months (months 55-60) for a total of five (5) years of service. The City has worked with Ava Community Energy, Fremont's electricity provider, to prepare plans and agreements for the installation of solar and battery storage systems at several City facilities throughout Fremont. The facilities would be part of a new Critical Municipal Facilities Project. The project would add resilience to municipal facilities, allowing them to operate emergency loads using solar and storage technologies during a power grid outage. It would also add clean, locally-produced power to the grid, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing savings on utility costs to the City. The project is an implementation action of the City's updated Climate Action Plan and Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Fremont City Council will consider approval of the project on Tuesday, December 3. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 3300 Capitol Avenue. The meeting will also be held virtually via Zoom. The agenda will be available online at https://lnkd.in/gpRfvyiv no later than Friday, November 29 at 5:00 p.m. It will include a link to a staff report for more information and instructions on how to participate and provide public comment. For questions or more information, email the City’s Sustainability team at sustainability@fremont.gov.
