Getting Outside of the Box... I didn't have this book on my Goodreads "want to read" list this year but took a chance after having it recommended by three different people in the span of two short weeks. That can't be a coincidence...and I wasn't disappointed. “Leadership and Self-Deception” by The Arbinger Institute reveals how self-deception can hinder effective leadership. The book introduces the concept of “the box,” a metaphor for self-deception, where we see others as objects rather than people. This mindset leads to self-betrayal and damages relationships by fostering blame and conflict. My Key takeaways: 🫥 Recognize Self-Deception: Self-deception damages personal and professional relationships by fostering blame, conflict, and mistrust. Recognizing how it shows up in our interactions with others is the first step to becoming a better leader. 🤝 Build Genuine Connections: We have a tendency to see ourselves as the main character in our story and relegate those around us to a supporting role without ever acknowledging that everyone has their own needs, wants, and goals. Shifting our perspective to see others as individuals with their own needs builds genuine and fulfilling relationships. ⛓️💥 Break the Chains of Self-Deception: Being authentic, adopting an empathetic mindset, providing candid feedback, and taking responsibility for one's actions are tangible ways to diminish the impacts of self-deception in organizations. By addressing self-deception, leaders can tackle the greatest issue facing organizations today and foster authentic connections to enhance overall effectiveness.

  • What does it take to lead a team of leaders? Former Philadelphia 76ers CEO Scott O'Neil knows that leadership is about more than managing—it’s about empowering others to step into their own potential. In this case study, O'Neil shares how adopting an outward mindset transformed the way he leads his team, fostering trust, collaboration, and a unified focus on shared success. Key takeaway: “To lead leaders, you must first see them as people—not as roles or resources.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/giEfHx_b

  • Do you feel there's a disconnect between what senior leaders prioritize and what their teams actually need? You’re not alone. According to our 2025 Workplace Trends Report, employee morale and engagement rank as top concerns for teams, yet executives tend to focus on professional development. Both are crucial, but here’s the catch: employees don’t quit for lack of training; they leave because they feel undervalued. This disconnect highlights a blind spot in many organizations: ➡️ Executives believe they’re investing in employees through upskilling. ⬅️ Employees feel unseen when morale, recognition, and collaboration are overlooked. Here’s the good news: bridging this gap doesn’t require a budget overhaul; it requires a mindset shift. Start with this: 1️⃣ Ask, then act: Build regular feedback loops that inform leadership decisions. 2️⃣ Humanize leadership: Managers should become conductors of collaboration, not just taskmasters. 3️⃣ Align development with engagement: Pair skill-building with recognition and purpose-driven initiatives. It’s simple: when employees feel seen and valued, they’re 7x more likely to drive revenue growth. That’s a metric every leader can get behind.
