If 4 people were drowning would you jump into treacherous water (five foot waves, major undertow), swim out over your head, and attempt to rescue them? My neighbor and friend Joseph Flanagan did that this summer. His actions, on a day when beaches were closed due to hazardous conditions, saved the lives of two teenage girls and a mother. Sadly, he was unable to save a 41 year old man who also heroically went in the water to attempt to save them. For his heroism Joe was recognized recently with the Corrine Passage Spirit of Evanston Award by the Evanston MashUp, an annual gathering hosted by the Evanston Chamber of Commerce. None of us know if we are courageous until we are tested. Had I been on the beach that day, I’m still not sure I would have gone into the treacherous waters but I’m sure glad Joe did and saved the lives of three people.
