About us
What we do might surprise you! AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, social mission organization with a membership of nearly 38 million. Our aim is to disrupt outdated stereotypes about aging, turn goals and dreams into real possibilities, and fight for the issues that matter most to people 50-plus, their families and communities. Our social impact work in health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment is at the heart of what we do. With offices in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we live and work in the communities we serve. We listen to what people need and want, and offer programs, services and trusted information that are directly relevant to them. State offices also work with our national office to amplify our members’ voices at the local and federal levels to help empower people 50 and above to choose how they live and work as they age. From being a force for positive change to producing the nation’s largest-circulation magazine – the full scope of what we do might surprise you! That’s why people who are excited by unique opportunities and galvanized by meaningful challenges come to work at AARP.

A nationally representative sample of 1,873 employers were surveyed late last year about business practices that affect older workers. Based on the responses of 35% of the employers surveyed who provided specific ages, the median age considered too old to hire was 58, and the median age considered too old to work was 62. “AARP believes all ages bring something to their employers, and older workers are no exception,” says Heather Tinsley-Fix @htinsleyfix, senior adviser for AARP’s Employer Pledge Program. “Experienced workers bring a wealth of valuable human skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and communication, as well as high levels of engagement, motivation and professionalism — and these qualities don’t have an expiration date.” Smart employers recognize the value of all workers and understand that people are living and working longer now. They stand to benefit greatly from ensuring they hire based on skills and experience, not just age. Let us know your experience below.

Rev. Cedric Alexander dedicated his career to serving others, but when 70 percent of his pension disappeared, his retirement plans were thrown into jeopardy. Thanks to AARP Foundation attorneys, he and thousands of AME pastors were able to reclaim much of their hard-earned retirement savings. Regardless of the career path, planning for the future is key to financial security. AARP is committed to helping protect the benefits people have worked hard for.

"I love animals so much. I can't describe why, but I just know that it's part of my life mission to help them." After witnessing the high number of older dogs in shelters, Chris Shaughness opened Four-Legged Forgotten Oldies Senior Animal Farm, a rescue and rehabilitation organization that aims to help senior pups find homes where they can be loved until the end.

Research revealed that 78% of boomers and 55% of Gen Xers think age will be a factor in their job search. And unfortunately, a recent survey by Transamerica Institute proves them right; many employers consider someone at age 58 to be "too old" to hire. With people staying in the workforce for longer, there’s major potential for an increase in age discrimination in hiring. AARP has resources to help you learn in-demand job skills, and information on how you can remain highly adaptive in a competitive job market. What are your thoughts on an employer thinking 58 is too old to hire?

But, in every case, the collective negative impact on older workers’ financial security, retirement security and access to health insurance benefits cannot be overstated. AARP is working with employers across the country to foster more age-inclusive workplaces. Have you ever experienced age discrimination at work? Learn the ways age discrimination can occur and join us in promoting workplaces that value all individuals based on their experience, not just their age: http://spr.ly/6045QcVcZ.
