To earn the team's respect & trust, I focused on observing the team dynamics without immediately imposing my direction. On my first days, I always make sure that I keep my insights under wraps unless something truly inappropriate occurs in front of me. Building trust starts by earning it through mutual respect, transparent communication, & setting clear, accountable goals. I always learned from my team by listening while getting their trust. My initial vision prioritised cultivating an empowering environment. Honesty & transparency were central to my approach, alongside making employee recognition an authentic part of the team culture.

When I faced this situation, I thought going in and dropping the hammer would be the best approach. I was wrong! Experienced members have valuable input to provide. It took me months to finally realize this, and when I did everything changed. Having one on one time dedicated to swap ideas with teammates allows for them to share what they have learned with you. When you begin to implement their positive ideas mixed with your processes you will quickly see an upswing in overall team trust. Trust takes time, so remember to be patient.

This is a tough spot, and I’ve been there - leading experienced teams at Google taught me that respect isn’t automatic, it’s earned. Start by listening. Seriously, just listen. Get to know their challenges, what they value, and what they think is working (or not). Then, add value fast. Show them you’re not just there to manage but to help them succeed — whether that’s clearing roadblocks, providing direction, or being their biggest advocate. And don’t pretend to know it all. A little humility goes a long way when working with seasoned pros. Respect starts with showing it, and trust builds from there.
