Setting clear goals and defining roles ensures everyone understands their responsibilities and how they contribute to the team's success. I also help build a virtual team and recognize individual achievements. Encouraging informal interactions, like virtual coffee breaks, helps build personal connections and fosters a sense of belonging. By valuing each member's unique strengths and creating a supportive environment, I ensure unity and cohesion despite the physical distance.

Team unity and cohesion has been one of the biggest challenges with remote work. Leaders have to be very deliberate in making time for teams to connect beyond the work or what we call the "technical sphere" at fassforward. Having a regular cadence (we recommend quarterly) of "onsites" in which you bring your team together in person is one way to find common ground with diverse personalities. Making time for personal connection on team remote calls is another. Encouraging people to share what they did over the weekend, or share what's top of mind for them beyond the work are other ways to create connection. Bottom line, as a leader, you have to be intentional to carve time out to bring people together in the "social sphere."

There should still be an established team culture, but one that adapts to the team's needs. Since we're talking about diverse personalities here, everyone should have a say in shaping the culture. Their perspectives must be taken into consideration to help them feel a sense of collective ownership and encourage mutual respect among members.

I would propose asking teammates to take time to prepare a personal presentation they develop about something that drives them personally and provides them with satisfaction - it could be a specific job duty, a sports team, a hobby, a special interest, a cultural tradition, etc. By honoring the diversity and getting to know what makes those around us light up, we foster cohesion through truly becoming aware of each other as individuals on a common team and not vague faces behind a screen.

Something unique I've tried is to assign tasks to each member that will have points of dependency on the other members' roles. Although it increases the opportunity for conflict, conflict and effective conflict resolution have been major tools in building unity. A paradox truly.
