This is a really concern area, which we never think. Drivers are the main pillar of any successful SCM. They should get the time to spend with family and friends. They must be happy with surrounded by good culture, respect, and financial benefits. Apart from that regular health check up is also important. There are many ways to make them happy. Need regular meeting with them to teach about the safety.
-
Do your drivers understand how routes are planned and why? We found that making sure drivers understand the WHY helps them to feel part of the larger process to maintain high levels of customer service while maintaining morale. Our drivers share in the benefits realised through business efficiencies and our success. Success comes from our people. A transport team who are able to balance customer needs, manage costs and resources while being flexible comes from experience, knowledge and a desire to put the customer first and also appreciate the effort required from our drivers - saying thank you goes a long way.

Use technology to optimize routes for efficiency, minimizing delays and fuel costs. Create schedules that allow for adequate rest and avoid overburdening drivers. Offer incentives for timely deliveries and safe driving. Maintain open communication channels for drivers to voice concerns and receive support. Provide ongoing training and support to help drivers manage their routes effectively.

Ensuring on-time deliveries while keeping drivers happy requires a delicate balance of efficiency and empathy. It starts with clear communication, setting realistic schedules, and leveraging technology to optimize routes and minimize delays. Equally important is fostering a supportive work environment—offering competitive pay, recognizing hard work, and providing flexibility when possible. When drivers feel valued and equipped to succeed, they are more motivated to deliver excellence, creating a win-win scenario where customer satisfaction and driver morale thrive in harmony.

On-time deliveries are not something that can be achieved without the driver's participation. We really need to balance this in order that delivery goals in very dense urban areas or in typical last-mile delivery areas can occur without the failing to meet the objectives of cost-efficient deliveries with a low carbon footprint. I believe that the concept of "eco-driving" will always bring these issues into consideration.

No. There is no perfect balance. No one can avoid a late delivery despite the best efforts and planning - what you need to ensure is a collaborative and supportive environment between you and the route planners, dispatchers and your drivers. Your company has to educate the customer, have a strong enough track record and relationship with the customer to withstand a late delivery.
