Balancing safety and productivity is tight rope walk however safety must be taking priority considering precious human life involved into it , however eventually we can find solutions to improve productivity as well by implementing safety solution and continuously look for avenues to improve productivity through Kaizen , low cost automation,VSM approach

It's not even a question. Safety first. Besides the basic moral principle of looking after you and you fellow team members, the quickest thing to stop any business in it's tracks to have a serious accident. To do it right is to do it safely.

Productivity decisions cannot be be made in isolation without safety. As a a machinist safety was always a concern, so naturally as an engineer I always had safety on my mind. It's a Mindset! "Never put someone in danger that you wouldn't put yourself in!

(edited)When you prioritize employee engagement, explaining the mission, why is important, and why we need everyone being onboard it starts to set the tone. To be onboard you need to be there and be at your best. Being safe is a must to accomplish all the above. Front line employees are way smarter than what sometimes others in the organizations give them credit for. Productivity is only a by-product of all the above, working methods are important but less so than employee engagement. Engage employees almost always come up with their own methods and improve whatever process was written on a desk.

From my experience, productivity and safety always go together, and standardization is the key to both. Safety is the first step toward improving productivity because it creates a safe environment for work. Without safety, any productivity improvements won’t last. By setting up clear, safe processes, we can achieve steady and lasting productivity.

If safety is not well managed and ingrained in the DNA of a company, then you have a major flaw in your processes, which means, you cannot be highly productive. Only if the workers follow clear guidelines and have a safety-oriented routine will they be productive. If that component is missing, then a lot more is missing, and you will also not achieve quality. And without quality there is no productivity, because you lose everything you think you gained to rework and scrap. Solution: Work with real time electronic work instructions that are clearly displayed and contain safety reminders. Also, use state of the art time management tools such as TiCon (MTM) and highly effective line balancing tools. In addition, follow the CM2 process.

In my experience, safety has to be designed in at the start of the process. It should be the first thing in mind and never compromised.

It’s always challenging to keep both safety and productivity at peak when time is scarce. However there are tools that can help, but keep priority to 1-Man ; where without or in risk there could be no production 2-Machine ; if fails there could be no part 3-Part ; main existence reason of any system Having this in mind in every project, action or change the following tips could minimize error. -Have a check list or template based on required standards from other disciplines such as EHS, maintenance, logistics, production etc. -Have everyone “take a look” and “give feed back” at any stage of the job. -Make a simulation, on data or carton city -Before handover or getting live, try to make the system fail, act as conspirator don’t be gentil!
