You're seeking optimal foundation solutions. How can you collaborate effectively with geotechnical engineers?
Working with geotechnical engineers requires clear communication and understanding of project needs. To achieve the best foundation solutions:
- Establish clear objectives and share your project vision to ensure alignment from the start.
- Engage in regular, structured check-ins to monitor progress and address any concerns promptly.
- Foster a collaborative environment by valuing their expertise and encouraging innovative solutions.
How have you approached collaboration with specialists to enhance your projects?

The foundation design includes two separate approaches: first, finding the optimal dimension based on soil characteristics that the soil laboratory has provided, such as elastic module and friction angle, and second, structural design. There is a lot of software for design. I use PLaxis to find dimensions due to allowable stress and settlement for long and short times. This software helps solve soil-structure interaction and extract the required parameters for structural design. The mentioned method is proper for pile design, and the AASHTO code stipulates that the P-Y method is the best approach. I have used it in tunnel projects and underground metro stations. The results were incredible, and I could prevent the vain cost.

What unites structural engineers with geotechnical engineers is undoubtedly the study values that are used for design. The issue is that these values (be it the allowable stress of the soil, or other values) sometimes have high safety factors defined by the type of system and the degree of uncertainty. Adding finite element programs such as Plaxis allows for greater precision. And if you add to that a powerful foundation FEM tool such as STAAD.Foundation Advanced, you have a large part of the way won, and less uncertainty in the geotechnical values.

Collaboration with specialists, like geotechnical engineers, starts with clearly defining project objectives and sharing a comprehensive vision to ensure alignment. I prioritize regular, structured check-ins to monitor progress and address concerns promptly, fostering an open dialogue that encourages feedback. Valuing their expertise is essential; I actively seek their insights and encourage innovative solutions that can enhance the foundation design. Creating a collaborative environment where all ideas are welcomed not only strengthens our working relationship but also leads to more effective and creative solutions. This synergy ultimately enhances the overall success of the project.

Effective collaboration with geotechnical engineers begins in the early planning stages of any project. It's crucial to share detailed project requirements, site conditions, and structural loads before any design work begins. This early engagement allows geotechnical engineers to conduct appropriate site investigations and provide foundation recommendations that align with both the project's technical requirements and budget constraints. Clear and consistent communication forms the backbone of successful collaboration.
