The first step is to Assess the situation - identify and understand the reasons your team is not aligned with the project goals and expectations. Next, it is essential to establish clear and impactful communication with your team and all stakeholders involved in the project. Help the teams to see the big picture, so they can break it down correctly to how each individual and their work fits it -- this is very helpful to Align expectations. Its also important have open communication throughout to appropriately monitor and adjust as needed - to ensure project success, while motivating and supporting the team as needed .

At G2, we have adopted Salesforce's V2MOM method. It stands for Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, and Metrics. It is much easier to identify discrepancies between current project work and goals if these things are clearly outlined in advance. When this happens, refer back to your V2MOM (or whatever planning and goal-setting approach your organization uses) and determine if the project needs to change or the goals must be revisited. While goals may shift, this should not occur every quarter. With clear objectives, it's much easier to say no to work that won't help you achieve them.
