Simply this can be solved in 2 parts, 1. Project tasks related: Have a proper format / set of questions that needs to be answered / to be given while adding the piece of information so everyone doesn't have or have the least questions about it. 2. Communication over calls / chats : Depending upon the diversity in the team , decide the communication language on calls, that covers everyone's language preferences.

To ensure effective communication in a multilingual team, I emphasized the importance of using a common language during team meetings, while fully supporting their right to converse in their native languages during informal or offline interactions. Encouraging a shared language in group settings helps maintain transparency and fosters inclusiveness. Additionally, regular check-ins and open feedback channels have been instrumental in bridging gaps and maintaining clarity across diverse language backgrounds.

In multilingual teams, I prefer a ‘common language’ approach, typically using English for all meetings, documentation, and communications. This ensures clarity and consistency. To support team members, it's important to provide language resources and encourage active use of translation tools for better understanding when needed.

The biggest challange to overcome with language is in the accent and local terms. Basic language is simple to overcome as almost any above high school education gives basic English skills. But hard to understand accent and the use of terms which don't directly translate, can create big challanges. When this happens, tolerance and the use of notes taking helps. The best medicine though is experience. The more the team communicates, the easier it is to overcome the accents and understand each other, even between two people from different cultures who both have terible, hard to understand accent.

Having worked as a transformation specialist on global rollouts for over a decade, I've faced my share of language and communication hurdles. Consistency and clarity are critical in these complex, diverse environments, 1. Agree on Universal Communication Forms: Establish common channels and methods that work across teams, ensuring everyone has access and knows the format. In person communications at least once during initiation of the project and video enabled communications to have been very helpful in my experience. 2. Identify Local Points of Contact: Having a local team member with basic English proficiency helps bridge language gaps, making it easier to align on project goals and manage expectations.
