This is my formula: Understand Their Perspective. Understand whys behind their needs. Communicate Effectively and Compromise without accepting impolite manner. Involve Them in Decision-Making. Risk management from the first. Build Trust and Relationships. Set Clear Expectations.

Getting them into discussions is equally important as delivering good results in software development cycle. Keeping them posted with all updates , getting them into important discussions should be done. This will create a nice environment where there are minimal issues and distractions

When stakeholders show disinterest in your project, you need to get them in 1 on 1 settings to have very open and transparent conversations to understand why. It is important to listen to them and understand their motivations, priorities and what success mean to them. You need to help them see that you both have shared goals and success, and they play an important role in achieving them together with you. It is also important to set clear expectations on each other's R&R and agree on an engagement model that both will commit to. Overcommunication is key in bringing clarity, eliminating misunderstanding and increasing efficiency. Celebrate the achievements together, big or small. It will help motivate them and build a trust relationship.

Strategy that’s been working quite efficient over last decade for me is .. clear communication of the overall mission ,Vision and the goals of the portfolio/company to the team(individual). Plus able to show the relationship between the deliverables and the overall project goal to the particular individual to make them feel important and valued .(that their output, quality and timescale actually matters n impacts the overall goal/vision). Plus an overview meeting once every two weeks , helps keep the visibility , helps track the status and enhances involvement .

I would try to go deeper in the main communication styles of each stakeholder to understand what is the best engagement strategy for each one. For instance verify, if the stakeholder is more rational than emotional, detail-oriented than general-oriented, introspective more than emphatic, etc. This kind of information helps you to touch in different dimensions depending on the stakeholder profile and consequently can bring more engagement into the projects.
