In my experience, when I have a coaching client that is struggling with work life balance, I ask them to start at the end and tell me what their life legacy is. We work our way backwards to determine what they need to do to obtain their legacy. What do they need to make a decision about? What do they need to commit to? Who do they need to surround themselves with and what processes can they implement in the professional and personal life to make it happen. The results are astonishing and I have brough grown men to tears with the process.

Flexible working hours, teleworking and delegation make it easier to balance work and family commitments. Company childcare and targeted time management make it easier to organise everyday life. Part-time work or job sharing can help at special times in life, and communication with the employer can lead to flexible solutions. Counselling services and sensible holiday planning offer additional support. Self-care and stress management also promote resilience and quality of life.

Help clients by encouraging them to define their “non-negotiables”—those aspects of work and life that are essential for their well-being and long-term goals. When they identify these core priorities, it becomes easier to make intentional choices about time and energy.
