Relationship building is the key. To accomplish your goals you will need to thoroughly explain and show why something is broken. Then the steps you will take to make the repairs. Once complete show your work. I’ve learned that you can disable a cranky customer with good humor and a good attitude. I apply this process with every customer no matter how long they have been a customer.

Some times educating the customer is a best practice. You can’t show them too much or they will attempt to do things outside of their understanding which will possibly cause damage to the equipment you are servicing. Start small. Teach them something useful that they may use every day. Like functions of the machine or menus that may come in handy optically. More advanced customers you can teach things like the PLC and techniques for troubleshooting. I’ve learned that helping them save an initial service call diagnosing a problem with them over the phone. This saves them the travel and the trip to their facility and will allow you and them to schedule the repairs once the parts arrive. Builds a strong relationship.
