We are in full support of the new rule in the European Union's new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR), which aims to make packaging more environmentally friendly, promote a circular economy, and standardize packaging rules across the EU. Here are the main goals of the PPWR, and why this is IMPORTANT: 🟩 Reduce environmental impact: Lower the harm packaging causes to the environment. 🟩 Promote circularity: Encourage the reuse and recycling of packaging materials. 🟩 Harmonize regulations: Ensure the same rules apply to packaging in all EU countries. The PPWR sees #biobased plastics (like those made by releaf® by avantium), as crucial for achieving the EU's goals of a #circulareconomy and climate neutrality. Here’s what the new regulation will do: 🍀 Use biobased feedstocks: Set rules for using #plantbased materials in plastic packaging. 🍀 Increase biobased plastics use: Set ambitious targets to use more biobased plastics. 🍀 Alternative to traditional recycling: Allow the use of biobased plastics when traditional recycling methods for food packaging are not available. If you're interested in learning more about how releaf®'s #PEF can help your business meet these new EU standards, or if you want to be part of the journey towards a more sustainable future, contact us today at hello@releaf.bio to explore how we can work together. #climateneutrality #fossilfreefuture #releaf #avantium #biobasedplastic #ecofriendlypackaging #plantbasedplastic Avantium
Avantium welcomes the adoption of the European Union’s ambitious Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR), an EU legislative initiative aimed at reforming current packaging and waste management rules. Its main goals are to reduce the environmental impact of packaging, promote circularity, and harmonize packaging regulations across the EU. The PPWR positions biobased plastics, such as releaf® by avantium, as a crucial component in achieving the EU's circular economy and climate neutrality objectives. The new regulation will introduce key measures within three years, including criteria for using biobased feedstocks in plastic packaging, ambitious targets to increase their use, and the use of biobased plastics when suitable recycling technologies for food-contact packaging are unavailable. Marco Jansen, Avantium’s Chief Commercial & Public Affairs Officer, comments: "We welcome the EU's progressive stance on biobased plastics. Avantium looks forward to collaborating with industry partners, policymakers, and stakeholders to achieve these targets and drive innovation in biobased plastics. Together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient future for the plastics industry.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eMqF42F4 #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #BiobasedPlastics

🌿 Myth Busting: Understanding Biobased and Biodegradable Plastics 🌿 🍀 Myth 1: “Biobased” Means Automatically Biodegradable ✨ Truth: Biobased and biodegradable are not the same. Biobased plastics are made from biological resources but are not necessarily biodegradable or compostable. They can be as durable as traditional plastics. 🍀 Myth 2: Biodegradable Plastics Are Always Better Than Recyclable Ones ✨ Truth: It’s more complex. Biodegradable plastics may disrupt recycling processes and require specific conditions to break down. Recyclable plastics, however, can be reused multiple times, reducing the need for new materials. Remember: The most eco-friendly option is often the one that gets reused or recycled properly in your area. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for making informed choices about sustainable packaging and materials. 🔥 FACT: releaf®'s PEF (Polyethylene Furanoate) is a 100% plant-based, recyclable, and circular material. It extends shelf life and offers superior barrier properties, making it a game-changer in sustainable packaging solutions. As nova-Institut GmbH aptly puts it, "PEF is here to stay," and with it, releaf® by avantium is poised to revolutionize the biobased polymer landscape. While we all know PEF is a sustainable alternative, the question remains: how do we make this work? ✨ The Answer: Wide Collaboration We need to work together to overcome financial and logistical barriers and create a level playing field through supportive legislation. Here’s why: 🍀 Industry-Wide Effort: Manufacturers, supply chain workers, and the packaging industry must collaborate to standardize processes, adapt existing technologies, and ensure seamless integration of PEF into current systems. 🍀 Regulatory Support: The EU Commission and other regulatory bodies play a vital role in creating favorable conditions for innovative materials like PEF. We need legislation that incentivizes market pull and supports the development of biobased industries. ✨ Releaf's commitment We are committed to making PEF a scalable and sustainable reality. Our recent milestones, such as the grand opening of Avantium's flagship plant, mark significant steps forward in making substantial amounts of PEF available for testing and integration. Let's work together to make PEF a sustainable and scalable option. "PEF is here to stay, and we stay curious about how it might change the plastic landscape in the future" The PEF World Congress organised by Renewable Carbon Plastics supported by the #H2020 project #PEFerence was featured in an article by the organiser. It gives a concise overview over the talks and presentations and places them in the context of future development of polyethylene furanoate (#PEF) on the European and global market. Highlights of the conference were of course talks by the PEFerence project partners, e.g. Tom van Aken, Bineke Posthumus and Ingrid Goumans from Avantium, Dr. Ángel Puente from nova-Institute and Claudio Menini from OMV Technologies Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eCzZftD5 The PEFerence consortium aims to replace a significant share of fossil-based polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate (#PET) as well as polyamide layers in multilayer packaging, and packaging materials like glass and metal with 100 % #BioBased furanics polyesters. PEF's excellent barrier properties and its calculated cost price indicate that it can compete with traditional, multi-million tonne, packaging products such as aluminium cans, multilayer packaging and small size multilayer PET bottles, on price and performance when produced at scale. PEF is sustainable and also completely recyclable. PEFerence only recently established the first industrial scale, cost-effective biorefinery flagship plant producing #FDCA (furan dicarboxylic acid), the bio-based building block of PEF. 🌍 The Hidden Carbon Story: Unpacking Embodied Carbon in Plastics In conversations about sustainability, we often hear the alarming statistic that only 9% of plastics are recycled. While improving recycling rates is undeniably important, there's a critical aspect of the plastic lifecycle that often goes overlooked: embodied carbon. 🌱Embodied carbon refers to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the extraction, production, and transportation of materials before they even reach the consumer. In fact, about 60% of a plastic's total carbon footprint comes from this "carbon backpack." This is where releaf® by Avantium becomes a game changer in this space. By utilizing plant-based feedstocks, releaf's PEF (polyethylene furanoate) can achieve a 65% lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based PET. This reduction is largely due to its plant-based origins, which do not release additional CO2 into the atmosphere. While we must strive to improve recycling rates, it’s equally crucial to develop materials that minimize their carbon impact throughout their entire lifecycle - from creation to disposal. Let’s shift the conversation from just recycling to a broader focus on sustainable material development! 🌍 #Sustainability #EmbodiedCarbon #PEF #InnovativeMaterials #CircularEconomy #GreenTech #ClimateAction #SustainableFuture #Avantium #Releaf #Biobasedplastics #Plantbasedplastics
