WebinarGeek founder and CEO Remco Treuren appeared in Het Financieele Dagblad yesterday on "Giving back gained time to employees". "AI and automation will play an increasingly important role in the workplace in the future. Some people fear losing their jobs because of this. However, there are also those who don't view it so pessimistically and instead highlight the positive aspects of both AI and online communication. Remco Treuren is one of those people. In 2015, he had so much faith in his company WebinarGeek – user-friendly webinar software – that he parted with his impressive sneaker collection. The money he earned from this allowed him to live while he worked on building his company. "The funny thing is, I grew from sneakers to a 'bootstrapped company.' A business set up without external financing, where profits are used to fuel the company's growth." Humanity "Some thought I was crazy," Treuren laughs, "but I truly believed that online communication and knowledge sharing would be important for the future. Today, it’s a fixed part of our work environment and daily life." While it's now indispensable, Treuren also emphasizes the importance of human contact in the workplace. "Being physically together certainly adds value, especially for creativity and connection. It fosters humanity because you can see someone’s facial expressions and better read body language. Live communication through webinars has the advantage of showing your human side. A slip-up or silence actually makes a presenter more human. Online contact is a valuable complement to physical meetings." Time gain In addition to online meetings, automation and AI applications are rapidly developing. According to Treuren, this is useful, provided it's used for the right purposes. "The development of AI started long ago; the difference is that it's now accessible to everyone. We need to embrace that. We must ensure that we use it to speed up and improve work processes, to do more in less time. The question is, what do you do with that gained time? Do you, as a company, use it to chase even more profit, or do you give that time back to your employees in the form of training or simply free time? In the latter case, you’re giving them back a piece of their life. We choose the latter, and I think if companies offer that, AI will seem much less frightening. Your employees will be eager to explore it and will use it to benefit the company, but also to benefit themselves."
