Great discussions at our last 2024 Council meeting as we look to build on our work with NI businesses next year. With the focus on building a sustainable economy and ensuring firms have access to highly skilled staff, members were updated on the progress of our policy working groups including Infrastructure, EV Infrastructure, People and Skills, Energy and our Future Leaders Network. This year’s joint CBI Northern Ireland/Ibec Joint Business Council report on the All-Island Business Policy Priorities was a great example of collaboration with business leadership in the South. Our Director Angela McGowan updated members on the JBC’s latest policy work. Louise Hellem, CBI Chief Economist, spoke about the CBI’s influence and impact in 2024, gave a state of trade economic update, and looked ahead to 2025. We thanked our outgoing Chair Richard Gillan for his work and look forward to Vice Chair Brian Donaldson stepping up to become Chair next year. Great to see so many of our members at the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) Annual Conference: Time for Growth, in London. It was a perfect day of keynote political speeches by our CEO Rain Newton-Smith, Chair Rupert Soames OBE, with other keynotes and discussions by the Leader of the UK Opposition, Kemi Badenoch MP, the Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP and panel discussions and networking opportunities. Great to see Matthew Palmer, the US Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, talking up NI-US cultural and investment ties, with the US a crucial market for NI businesses. Our Devolved Nations Ambassador Tracy Black caught up with Diana Fitzsimons Belfast Harbour Commissioner at the event.
