It was a privilege to attend the Roundhouse Trust Film Fund Screening last week for an evening showcasing bold and innovative films from talented young creatives that question the times we live in and explore issues impacting our daily lives. Members of Wiggin’s Film & TV team, Daniel Whybrew and Paul Grindey, were honoured to be in attendance to present this year’s Wiggin Emerging Filmmakers Award to Honey Birch for their short film entitled “If This Were Purgatory”. Honey was one of six emerging filmmakers up for the award. They impressed the panel of four judges, including Wiggin Partner Gráinne McKenna, with their film that follows a group of friends on a night out and eavesdrops on the voice of a queer club queue. Congratulations again to Honey, and we look forward to closely following their development on the next stage of their creative journey.

We would like to offer a huge congratulations to Honey Birch who last night was named as the winner of the 2024 Wiggin Emerging Filmmakers Award. Honey won the award for their short film entitled ‘If This Were Purgatory’, which follows a group of friends on a night out and eavesdrops on the voice of a queer club queue. They were one of six emerging filmmakers up for the Award alongside Muhammed Bittaye, Alison Foyle, Issy Franklin, Swekrati Rai and Grac Talbot. Honey’s reaction to being named the winner was wonderfully captured as the Roundhouse hosted its Winter Film Fund Screening in its Studio Theatre last night. Honey impressed a four-strong judging panel, which included Philip Ilson, Co-Director, London Short Film Festival, January 2025; Gráinne McKenna, Partner at Wiggin; Derek Richards FRSA, Head of Broadcast & Digital at the Roundhouse and previous Wiggin Emerging Filmmakers Award winner, Sofia Negri. They will also receive a £8,000 grant to develop their film career. Honey’s journey with the Roundhouse started in 2018 at the Poetry Slam Final before they joined the Poetry Collective later that year. They then worked on Behind The Lens becoming the first person to progress from that course to the Roundhouse’s Film Fund – and is now the 2024 Wiggin Emerging Filmmakers Award winner.
