A fantastic example of how the Athletics for a Better World (ABW) Standard is delivering tangible change. The Oslo Bislett Games has achieved Platinum-level certification, setting a global benchmark in sustainable athletics. From ending their partnership with ExxonMobil in 2016 to now hosting the most environmentally sustainable track and field competition on the planet—powered by 100% renewable energy, achieving gender parity, and offsetting 200 tonnes of CO2—this is sustainable leadership in action. Think Beyond's Susie Tomson had the pleasure of attending as the verifier for this incredible event. We’re proud to have helped design the ABW Standard with World Athletics, enabling events like this to integrate sustainability into every aspect of delivery. Huge congratulations to Steinar Hoen, Linnea Elisabeth Vågen Svensson, Bob Ramsak, and the World Athletics team for driving this transformation and proving how sport can inspire change.
In 2016, the Oslo Bislett Games made the bold decision to end its partnership with Exxon Mobil. Meeting Director Steinar Hoen led the event on a transformational journey to become the most environmentally sustainable athletics meeting on the planet. Fast forward to 2024: The Oslo Bislett Games has achieved Platinum level recognition against the Athletics for a Better World (ABW) standard - the highest level of sustainability certification for athletics events. Key achievements: ⚡ Powered entirely by 100% renewable energy 🥕 93% local sourcing of products (within 100km) 🚶♀️ 81% public/active travel by spectators 🌳 Offset 200 tonnes of CO2, supporting local carbon capture and global reforestation projects 👫 Achieved 50-50 gender parity in the organising committee 🌱 Strong sustainability communications and athlete engagement "They have created a template for excellence that all sports, not just athletics, can follow to achieve success." - World Athletics President Sebastian Coe Launched in January 2024, the ABW Standard is set to become the largest sustainability rating system in sport, with nearly 100 events worldwide already reporting through it. 🗣️ "In terms of the communications, I think that's where the environmental movement has not got it right in the past. It definitely needs to be around providing options and talking in a really positive light." 💡 "Typically, it's been like, 'Oh, don't do this, don't do that' and 'Use less this, and turn the heating down.' None of it feels like fun and then you're the 'fun sponge' or you the 'fun police.'" 👮 "We're not gonna solve these world's problems by doing less and people aren't going to change enough. But, what we do need to do, and I think the opportunity for sport is..." New podcast is out now with Dr Susie Tomson, one of the world’s leading proponents of sustainability in sport 🌍 Susie and Andy discuss the evolving motivations behind sustainability in sports, from working with innovative properties like SailGP, where sustainability is at the core, to supporting legacy rightsholders such as Liverpool Football Club in making meaningful environmental strides.
