Personas in marketing - Are they still relevant? In advertising, Personas are a staple in marketing pitches. We are either given Personas by clients or we have created them based on sector-specific knowledge. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the Gambling sector. BUT nowhere is it more IRRELEVANT than in that very same sector. Consider this example: “John is 34, has two betting accounts, places four football bets a month, and never stakes more than £10. His motivation? To use his excellent football knowledge to try to win a few quid.” On the surface, it seems useful. But does it really help us? Not at all. Here’s what’s missing: • What types of bets does John place? 1X2, an ACCA, in play, BTTS, corners under/over? • Does John only bet on his own team, or is it broader? Is it just the Premier League? • What’s his betting style? Backing favourites or taking a punt on long shots? • Does John dabble in other sports? • When does he place his bets? • What sites or social media does John consult before betting? Without these insights, how can any marketer make informed decisions about the creative to show John, or where to place that creative? The reality is, this level of detail is not out of reach. Data platforms and ad tech are ubiquitous, enabling agencies and operators to create bespoke, highly targeted campaigns tailored to countless cohorts. The result? A player activity/value-based marketing infrastructure that drives measurable results, better acquisition, stronger retention, and ultimately, greater commercial success. So, why do so many operators and agencies still cling to the outdated Persona model? What’s your take on this?

This week we welcome Fiorena Velaj and Jamie Grubb, the latest additions to our team, joining us as placement students from Kingston and Newcastle universities. Our university placement programme has been a core part of our recruitment structure since its inception in 2016. In the past 8 years we’ve taken on 12 placement students, from universities nationwide, including Loughborough, Newcastle, Exeter and Kingston. Subsequently, 9 have returned to a permanent role following graduation, with the programme providing invaluable experience for students both returning for their final year & setting them up perfectly for a career in media, following graduation. Coming full circle, later this month we have Louis Henry, our most recent placement student returning, after graduating from Loughborough. Welcome back Louis!

Kicking off our very own summer of sport, our team have been busy up and down the country with a Play on The Pitch at both the Etihad and St James' Park, courtesy of our partners at LeoVegas Group. This allowed Co-Founder and lifetime Newcastle fan, Iain Linkleter to fulfill a boyhood dream of lining up at St James'.

A fantastic night last Thursday, with a number of the team hosted by our partners BetMGM, at the BetMGM Premier League Darts final at the O2. The final in London drew to a close the 17-week tournament, which showcased the tremendous work of Mike Hicks and our design team, in creating the stage design. An excellent night, rounded off with a Luke Littler 9 darter!

A huge congratulations from the team at Tomorrow to both Felix Stoddart & Glen Olsson, having completed the London Marathon last Sunday. Cheered on by a number of the Tomorrow team across the course, Felix finished his first marathon and Glen, incredibly finished his second in as many weeks, following the Brighton marathon two weeks earlier. In the process both raised money for a fantastic cause in the Round Table Children’s Wish, helping to make the wishes of seriously ill children across the UK and Ireland become a reality. Our placement student programme has been a core part of our agency recruitment strategy since 2016, with a 70% success rate of former placement students returning to the agency post-graduation. We’re committed to offering students the opportunity to supplement their university degree with real life business experience and this year is no exception. If you’re an ambitious university student, looking for a year-long placement, working at one of the UK’s leading independent marketing agencies, we’re now open to applications.
