Real change, real impact.   Players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised over £25 million for WaterAid since 2013 🌍💧. For Christina and her community, fetching water isn’t just exhausting—it’s dangerous. Early in the morning, while it’s still dark, Christina walks long distances with others to avoid going alone. But the journey is still full of risks, from stepping on harmful creatures to the constant fear of attacks. Having clean water nearby wouldn’t just mean less time walking—it would mean freedom from the fear that comes with the journey of collecting water. As the year comes to a close, we reflect on one of WaterAid’s standout moments of 2024: our 4th annual Wellbeing Day. This year’s event, themed 'How do we prioritise wellbeing and performance,' brought teams across WaterAid together to participate in activities designed to spark meaningful discussions and promote wellbeing. We were also privileged to hear from some of our leaders, who shared their perspectives on this vital theme and its role in fostering collective success. By raising awareness and encouraging actions that prioritise mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, we can not only enhance performance but also help foster a supportive and inclusive culture for all WaterAiders. Congratulations to South Africa on taking over the G20 Presidency. The mission of the #G20 – to build a fairer world and a sustainable planet, to fight inequality, and to champion health and wellbeing for all – has never been more critical. And at the heart of this mission, there is an undeniable truth: access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is fundamental to life, dignity and progress. And yet almost one in ten people don’t have clean water close to home. With hope and solidarity, our chief executives, regional and country directors urge the G20 to uphold the commitments made in the Rio de Janeiro Leaders’ Declaration to strengthen the financing and delivery of water, sanitation and hygiene. Commitments that could transform millions of lives and ensure resilience for generations to come.

In November, I had the pleasure of supporting Caroline Dalton, Laura Summerton, Tadg O'Keeffe (from the WA UK office), and Cian in Monze, Southern Zambia. They were in the country to capture transformational stories from WaterAid's work dating as far back as 2013. It was both insightful and fun working with this amazing team! Field visits are always exciting, especially when you get to hear firsthand accounts from community members whose lives have been transformed through our work. Behind us in the video is a water kiosk constructed 11 years ago. It’s still standing and functional—a testament to the sustainability of WaterAid’s efforts. However, the population has doubled since its installation, highlighting the need for continued investment in WASH infrastructure. It was humbling to collaborate with Mainza and Precious, whose deep knowledge of the community and translation skills ensured the work flowed effortlessly. The visit was a success. A huge thanks to Tassel Bulanda and everyone who made this possible!

By 2030, the Beacon Project aims to provide clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene to every person in Lahan, a town in south-eastern Nepal. Beyond its local impact, this project serves as a model for driving and managing the transition toward universal access to water and sanitation globally. Highlights from the latest annual report include: ✅ Over 22km of water pipelines installed ✅ 889 households connected to piped water for the first time ✅ Nearly 2,400 students reached through hygiene behavior change education These milestones showcase the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing the water and sanitation crisis. This group connects staff with leaders, bringing the voice and lived experience of staff more fully into decision making. Our SRG is made up of a cross-section of WaterAid UK staff who explore ideas and issues raised by employees, contribute to key changes and projects, and collaborate with leaders to ensure WaterAiders thrive at work. Let's hear a bit more from Munawar about the group... 🎤 Munawar, what do you think is the greatest strength of WaterAid’s SRG? The SRG is intentional about surfacing and highlighting collective issues that staff can’t raise in other forums. It focuses on group issues and ideas with broad impact, reaching more staff. One thing I like about the group is that it also includes staff located in other countries. 🎤 What’s one thing you’re proudest of from your time with the SRG? I’m proud of many things. Being part of the pioneer group and volunteering for the first time in this way is something I cherish. Our team worked incredibly well together, despite everyone having competing priorities. We consistently supported one another, and over the two years I was part of the group, there was always a strong culture of collaboration and mutual help.
