It’s been over a month since our 2024 Autumn Health and Wellbeing Summit. Bringing together 26 exhibitors and over 235 attendees showed the incredible strength of our healthcare community. The day was full of brilliant presentations and discussions that showcased our industry's commitment to excellence. Happy #NationalTreeWeek! 🌳 At the start of the winter tree planting season, here’s a fun tree-related fact: did you know there are more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way? 🌌 Yet despite Earth having an estimated 3 trillion trees vs 400 billion or so stars in the Milky Way, deforestation remains a huge problem. Every year The Tree Council celebrates trees and their benefits for our planet 🌍, an initiative we’re supporting via our partnership with Ecologi | B Corp™, a climate solutions and carbon offsetting #BCorp. Since this partnership began, Unum UK has: ♻️ Avoided or removed more than 3,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) 🌲 Planted more than 109,000 trees  🌼 Contributed to the restoration of more than 77 square metres of wetland and wildflower habitats. Some recent measures we’ve used to achieve these results include encouraging employees to sign up to donate to Ecologi via salary sacrifice. For every employee who signs up to this during our current benefit window, we’ve planted a grove of 20 trees. We also worked with Ecologi on their new “Business for #Biodiversity” mission in relation to the recent #COP29 Summit. This mission includes a range of critical environmental and transformative impact benefits for biodiversity and the #climate. At Unum UK, we’ll look back on this year as one that really stands out in terms of how proud we were to support the Armed Forces community. 2024 began with news that our Rich Eburne won Combat Stress’ Corporate Fundraiser of the Year Award for 2023. Hot on the heels of Rich's success, we marched in March with two 10-mile walks from our Basingstoke and Dorking offices, events that raised £6,000 for Combat Stress . Many representatives from Unum attended a Combat Stress dinner in May 2024, a glittering night that raised a considerable sum for the charity. Over the summer, we volunteered at a local Combat Stress location to help them tidy up their outdoor space to make it more inviting for veterans and their guests. We were also delighted to be told we’d achieved the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme’s Gold Award, the Scheme’s highest honour, for the support we offer to the #ArmedForces Community. It was fantastic to be invited aboard HMS Warrior in October for the official award ceremony, where our #CEO Mark Till was accompanied by Rich Eburne and Annika Gledhill-Wallace. Due to our Gold Award, members of our Group Policy Servicing team were lucky to be invited to a leadership and challenge day organised by the South East HQ Army Division to get a small insight into the skills needed by our Armed Forces. In November, we supported Royal British Legion in selling poppies outside Waitrose in Basingstoke. On Remembrance Day itself, we capped off a moving UK-wide service with readings of winning poems from a competition held for our people and their families to capture the sacrifices made by the #ArmedForcesCommunity in words.
