UK Architects Declare

Architecture and Planning

A declaration on climate and biodiversity emergency by UK architects.

About us

The twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are the most serious issue of our time. Buildings and construction play a major part, accounting for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats. For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission and design buildings, cities and infrastructures as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system. The research and technology exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will. Recognising this, we are committing to strengthen our working practices to create architecture and urbanism that has a more positive impact on the world around us.

My first Christmas present of the year arrived! Duncan Baker-Brown's magnus opus, 'The Re-Use Atlas' (2nd edition) ♻️ Really looking forward to getting my teeth into this over the next fortnight - packed full of project case studies of people building from 'waste' 💩 designing for future reuse 🏗️ creating circular materials 🧱 and reimagining the way we build buildings 💡 And most importantly, all as real projects, in the real world, with the usual real constraints around time and budget 💰 A beautiful evidence base of possibility - proof that we CAN transition to a fully circular economy #circulareconomy #reuse #reclaim #renew #refurbish #reimagine #UseLessStuff

From its launch earlier this year, we've seen our Regenerative Design Primer as 'work in progress'. Now it's time to shape the next iteration and we're setting up working groups to deliver our Primer 2.0. We need YOU to be part of this evolution! Join us online on 21st January at 12pm for expert presentations, breakout groups & discussions: ·      Brief overview of the Regenerative Design Primer and next steps ·      Regenerative Design Primer - Your feedback ·      Regenerative Design - What are the blockages? ·      Regenerative Design - How to move forward The session is aimed at cross collaboration to further knowledge of regenerative design and help push the transition towards a regenerative built environment. Book your place now https://lnkd.in/enz95reA   And thanks to everyone who joined us for our previous Regenerative Design Resources event, last month: We had an excellent turnout for talks and discussion on our Primer, AD & Architecture Today's Regenerative Architecture Index, Constructivist's Regenerative Design Lab, UKGBC's Regenerative Places Programme, FCBS's Regenerative Symposium, and Planit's Regenerative Practice Tool. You can watch the video of the presentations here https://lnkd.in/eEtJBX7w #regenerativedesignprimer #designprimer #regenerativedesign #ukarchitectsdeclare #v2 #workinggroups #workinprogess #collaboration #industrychange

🌳 Help us to drive a just transition in the built environment! It would really help us if you could take a few moments to answer this very quick survey (4 questions) 🙏 🙏🙏 💡AD’s Climate Justice guide needs your input! AD is developing new guidance on building a just transition. This terminology is increasing in use, and collectively we're becoming progressively aware of the impacts that our actions and choices have on different communities. It’s really important that we have practical input from signatories and industry experts, to create a truly collaborative resource for all practices, sourcing a wide range of examples and experiences. Steering Group member Mandy Franz (pictured below with other Steering Group members & speakers at AD's 2022 'Building Justice' event) is leading our working group: “We have a short survey (below) with just four questions and an opportunity to say if you'd like to offer any further input, or if you can provide brief details of examples, ideas or useful contacts that can inform our new guidance. We really appreciate your help, thank you!” https://lnkd.in/e2FcJ_NP #guidance #ukarchitectsdeclare #climatejustice #ukarchitectsdeclare #justtransition

Last month, our postdoc, Emily Birch, had the honor of presenting A Research Perspective on Regenerative Bio-Inspired Design as both a speaker and panellist at the launch of Dave Cheshire’s remarkable book, Regenerative By Design: Creating Living Buildings and Cities (RIBA publication). The event, hosted by AECOM, featured a dynamic panel including Matt Webster from British Land and Anna Lisa McSweeney, representing UK Architects Declare. Together with a large and engaged audience, the discussion underscored a crucial call to action: the industry must transition from degenerative to regenerative practices. Key themes included embracing biomaterials, biotechnology, and biomimetic innovations, as well as the importance of developing new testing standards tailored to emerging technologies—particularly biotechnologies—to accelerate the adoption of regenerative solutions across the industry. This vibrant and thought-provoking forum provided an invaluable opportunity to share both the successes and lessons learned from pioneering regenerative projects, alongside the latest innovations from the Living Construction Group. We highly recommend Dave’s book, which masterfully captures the principles of regenerative practice and envisions an inspiring, sustainable future for our built environment. Thank you for the invitation, Dave—it was a privilege to take part!

  • Our fabulous AD Steering Group member Laura Baron teaming up with Brogan MacDonald to explore the concept of reuse and repair in the built environment #reduce #repair #reuse #recycle #reimagine #builtenvironment

    Head of Sustainability at Purcell

This #blackfriday isn't it time to say - "we have enough stuff". In 2020 we reached an uncomfortable milestone. Global human-made mass, exceeded all living biomass. Nine years prior to this, Patagonia ran an iconic 'Don't buy this jacket' campaign, encouraging repair over replacement. What if the built environment took a similar approach? The amazing Brogan MacDonald and I carried out this thought experiment, to consider what principles we would need to apply to reduce, repair, reuse, recycle and reimagine. This is what we came up with. Do you have any similar ideas? #BeGoodCustodiansNotCustomers #DontMakeThisBuilding (New building featured was the first we stumbled upon. thousands of other new build examples are available!)
