2025 is set to be a big year for Demo4, our flagship high temperature #superconducting (HTS) #fusion magnet system. Tokamaks use strong magnetic fields to confine and control a plasma. HTS #magnets, which are over five times more energy-efficient than conventional #superconductors, open the pathway to commercial fusion in a spherical tokamak. With operations set for the second half of this year, we aim to gain crucial insights into the performance and interaction of these groundbreaking #magnets in a tokamak configuration, paving the way for the next generation of energy-producing fusion pilot plants. In the first half of the year, our focus will be on completing the build and commissioning of the core #magnet and sub-systems. Our journey through the design, modelling, coil winding, manufacturing and tooling, has already honed our expertise in large-scale HTS magnet systems. Demo4 is a key step on the pathway to clean, limitless #fusionenergy. We’re excited about the year ahead! #FusionForAll #CleanEnergyTransition #Superconductors #Innovation

Commercialising fusion energy and our groundbreaking HTS magnet technology
About us
We are developing the technology to deliver clean, secure and affordable fusion energy in the 2030s. Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Our US subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019. We are the only private fusion company with over a decade’s experience developing the two technologies that offer the most efficient and commercially attractive route to fusion energy; the compact spherical tokamak and high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. TE Magnetics, our dedicated HTS magnet business division, is focussed on becoming the leading supplier of HTS technology for fusion and other exciting new applications, including science, renewable energy and propulsion on land, in water air and space.

Congratulations to Board member Warren East for receiving a knighthood in the King’s New Year Honours List for services to the economy and net-zero. Previously CEO of Rolls-Royce and Arm, Warren joined Tokamak Energy as Non-Executive Director in May 2023 on our mission to deliver clean and limitless #fusionenergy and open new fields of performance through transformative high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Warren said: “I’m delighted to receive this honour and pleased to fly the flag for industry in the UK. “In ARM and Rolls-Royce, I’ve been very lucky to lead two of our stand-out engineering and technology businesses that both punch well above their weight on a global stage. Both are full of incredibly dedicated and extremely capable people worldwide, and of course this honour is really about them. “Since leaving Rolls-Royce, I remain focussed on engineering and technology, encouraging young people into STEM subjects, and working with businesses enabling the energy transition and climate change mitigation, alongside fundamental technology and essential infrastructure.” #FusionforAll #HTSmagnets

High temperature #superconducting (HTS) #magnets are a game changer for #fusion. As we gear up for operations with our flagship Demo4 fusion #magnet system next year, our latest #FusionPioneer video features Demo4 Chief Engineer, Graham Dunbar. Graham provides a progress update and explains the importance of building and testing in a full tokamak configuration. The knowledge we're gaining puts us at the forefront of designing and building large scale HTS magnet systems, which are essential for achieving commercial #fusionenergy. Demo4 is a world-first complete set of high-field HTS magnets in a tokamak configuration. It comprises 44 individual coils assembled into 14 toroidal field (TF) limbs and two poloidal field (PF) coils. Operating in a vacuum at 20 Kelvin (-250°C), it will generate a magnetic field nearly a million times stronger than the Earth’s 🌍 #FusionForAll #CleanEnergyTransition #Innovation

Last week, we announced an exciting $52 million upgrade programme for our ST40 spherical tokamak in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The upgrade will focus on integrating lithium plasma-facing components (PFCs). But what’s so special about lithium? We’ve long recognised that lithium will play a vital role in #fusion power plants, both for PFCs and the ‘breeding blankets’ that will surround the plasma to capture energy and ‘breed’ tritium fuel. As part of ST40’s upgrade, we aim to coat all PFCs, particularly the central column and divertors, with solid lithium using the ‘lithium evaporation’ technique. Pioneering work by Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and others has shown that lithium PFCs can significantly improve plasma performance, absorbing particles that escape the plasma, helping maintain high temperatures at the plasma edge, and increasing energy confinement and edge stability. By incorporating lithium into ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak, we’ll greatly enhance our understanding of this critical enabling technology. This project strengthens the UK and US partnership on fusion energy and enables our collaborators at universities and national laboratories in both countries to benefit from ST40 research. PPPL will lend their expertise in lithium coatings, while Oak Ridge National Laboratory will assist in deploying pellet fuelling capabilities. Inspiring the next generation of #scientists, #engineers, technicians and business professionals is crucial for supporting the rapidly growing #fusion industry. This week, Tokamak Energy welcomed The Fusion Skills Council to #Oxford. The Council represents a diverse cross-section of the UK fusion sector, including academia, research institutions, fusion companies, and the supply chain, all working together to expand the talent pool entering our workforce. The day featured a Q&A with our CEO, Warrick Matthews; an update on UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Fusion Opportunities in Skills, Training, Education and Research (FOSTER) programme; and various workshops. These are exciting times for #fusionenergy, with significant investment from both the private sector and the UK Government, major strides towards net energy production, and technological breakthroughs with exciting commercial potential. By collaborating, we can build skills and foster a culture of inclusivity and creativity, where new ideas and innovations can thrive. Our work is just beginning, so keep a look out for future updates! #FusionForAll #CleanEnergyTransition

Fusion energy is coming to the U.S. and we’re proud to be playing our part. We’ve partnered with The Grainger College of Engineering at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to solve one of the key challenges for the fusion pilot plant we’re designing as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. Experts from both teams will work together at Illinois Grainger Engineering’s cutting-edge facilities to carry out vital research on liquid metal plasma-facing components. This is a key focus for next-gen #fusion devices, with the potential to improve plasma performance and protect solid first wall materials from temperatures 10 times hotter than the sun. Tokamak Energy is the only private company with more than 10 years’ experience designing, building and operating tokamaks. Our pilot plant will generate 800 megawatts (MW) of fusion power and 85MW of net electricity – enough to power and heat more than 70,000 American homes. Partnerships like this are driving the innovation needed to deliver clean, limitless, secure #fusionenergy ⚡ Read our full press release here: 👇 https://lnkd.in/eiWJTvbB #FusionForAll #CleanEnergyTransition #Innovation #Engineering
