Assuming you've done the appropriate level of diligence, research, and stress testing... ... and assuming you have a warranted high level of conviction... ... the strength of your investment thesis also depends on your execution strategy. And if that strategy depends on your ability to pick "winners", you're already reducing the probability of that investment thesis paying off. For example: Your thesis is that electrical energy consumption is going to rise by X% annually over the next decade. That's a valid thesis, supported by the growth in cloud computing, data centers, AI spending, population and economic growth in Asia (China, India), electrification of transport (EVs and public transport), etc. Your first instinct might be: "invest in power generation / utilities". But will increased power consumption translate into higher profits for utilities? a highly regulated part of the chain? And what kind of utilities will gain the most? Coal? Gas? Nuclear? Green? You might be right about the consumption part, but you're significantly reducing your probability of success by having to choose a potential winner in a highly regulated sector. Here's a different approach: Regardless of what type of power is generated to meet demand, they all need (i) substations, (ii) transformers, (iii) cables, (iv) poles & towers, (v) switchgear and breakers, (vi) voltage regulators, etc. etc. And they all need specialist electrical contracting companies to design & install / maintain them. All of these are "power source agnostic": they don't care what type of fuel is used to generate power (gas vs. nuclear), as they are needed regardless to distribute that power. That applies across virtually every investment thesis: aim to minimize the number of winners you have to get right for the thesis to pay off. You also want to avoid confounding factors: e.g. copper is needed for power lines, transformers etc. But copper is also a highly volatile commodity, the price of which is also impact by other factors, including construction, geopolitics, environmental factors, supply, and (potentially) substitution... #investment

Having commissioned plasma based installations myself, I know how crucial the first plasma demonstration is to build confidence. I cannot believe that this is being now deprioritized for ITER. The new plan given in this press conference seems to be conceived to circumvent the difficulty of the moment, for communication purposes. Indeed, the additional delay and the increased cost are uncomfortable news for the whole fusion energy community. It's time to start engaging the wider fusion energy community in the consequences of these delays and of the impact of budget increase on fusion energy research as a whole. Other promising approaches are being set aside and left with no resources, because of these circumstances. We are entering a new age for Fusion Energy and we need more resources for sure. But we also need to open a discussion on how to support seriously alternative concepts.

Technology has a dirty little secret....It can't run without power (Captain Obvious) but it will either be gas or nuclear. Solar and wind are still not able to provide the power.
