Blue Hat helps Scale Up businesses accelerate their product delivery

Brilliant event at techUK yesterday with the UK Investor and Entrepreneur community. It was a great line up of speakers and panelist. Thanks Ed Bevan. Wonderful to meet James Uffindell of Bright Network helping graduates find career building jobs. He shared his motivation and journey from organic growth to VC funding to scale. He talked about Extreme Ownership - as the founder you need to be on top of everything. I got a lot from the talk by Ian Merricks, FBCS FRSA or VenturePath sharing a run book of pointers to prepare for your Series A raise. I am sure there is a book in that Ian. Just picking one, work backwards from your Data Room, you cannot write a pitch deck without having solid foundations - so many firms don't. And the VC panel gave us many take-aways - 💰 A decent ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) underpins that you have a good Product Market Fit, if you are not making money, the idea is untested. 🛑 Don’t go to VCs too early with £1m-ish ARR. If VCs are looking for £1m ARR, spend your time achieving that goal. ⚽ Make sure you have the right team for the next round of investment 📈 Knowing your numbers and your business is key, backing James’ earlier point on Extreme Ownership. 🎬 Control your burn rate today. Spend too much and you will need a much higher current and future ARR. 🔢 Not being ready with Financial Plan was a real red-flag to investors, backing Ian’s earlier point on having your Data Room and other assets ready to go before you pitch. ⏩ Investors spend very little time looking at the Pitch Deck, as little as 2 minutes, so get to the point - the problem and your solution quickly and succinctly. Thank you to the VC panelists, Edward Keelan or Octopus Ventures, Eugénie Colonna d'Istria of Finch Capital, Amrit Sami of Mercia Ventures, and Maeve Crowley of Smedvig Ventures I look forward to future events, if you read this, I suggest you join too!

  • 🧐 How do scaling SaaS businesses approach innovation? Innovate internally or outsource? It can depend on the sector. For example, Pharma and Healthcare industries have mostly embedded innovation into their organisations, whereas Public Sector organisations continue to outsource. 👉 SaaS scaleups often adopt a hybrid approach; creating internal programs to foster a culture of innovation while outsourcing to tap into external expertise and accelerate specific innovation initiatives. In Part 3 of our blog series on Optimising Operational Efficiency we deep dive into how scaling SaaS platform businesses can approach and benefit from innovation. Here are a couple of pros and cons for each approach – read the rest in the article: Innovating internally: ✅ Deeper understanding of customers and products, tighter control over IP… ❌ High costs maintaining a dedicated team, limited access to specific skills… Outsourcing innovation: ✅ Access to specialist expertise and cutting-edge tech, reduced overheads, opportunities for open innovation… ❌ Risk of integration challenges, potential misalignment of objectives 👀 Read Part 3 and let us know what you think. • 🌟 Top 5 strategies for building a culture of innovation inside your scaling SaaS business Here’s a little taster (read the full article below): 1️⃣ Lead from the top: Innovation must be a top-down priority, with senior management visibly championing and encouraging creative thinking and continuous improvement. 2️⃣ Empower your people: Encourage team members to take calculated risks, experiment with new ideas, and challenge the status quo. Host internal innovation workshops and consider an intrapreneurship programme. 3️⃣ Seek out beneficial partnerships: Cultivate relationships with external partners, such as other start-ups, universities, relevant associations, and industry experts. 4️⃣ Prioritise user insights: Relentlessly pursue the capture and understanding of users’ needs, pain points, and behaviour through ongoing user research, analytics, and feedback mechanisms. 5️⃣ Measure and iterate: We’ve all heard the phrase “what gets measured gets done” and innovation is no different. Use this data to continuously refine and improve the innovation processes and culture within the organisation. 👉 Read Part 3 of our blog series on Optimising Operational Efficiency now let us know what you think. • 💡 Creating a culture of innovation can drive productivity and growth. Especially for SaaS scale-ups. Here’s how... Innovation is strategically important to all businesses. It can help you stay competitive, optimise performance and costs, streamline processes, enhance the customer experience, and cultivate an innovative culture – all of which contribute to sustainable growth and long-term operational excellence. Four key benefits: 1️⃣ Improved competitiveness. You already know how dynamic and competitive the SaaS marketplace is. So, it’s no surprise that continuous innovation is essential to help you differentiate your products, meet evolving customer needs, and stay ahead of competitors. 2️⃣ Improved performance and scalability. As your product matures, innovative approaches to infrastructure, architecture, and emerging technologies enable more efficient operations at scale. 3️⃣ Increased productivity. Product, process, and technological innovations can lead to cost optimisations through more efficient resource utilisation, streamlined operations, and leveraging disruptive pricing or business models. 4️⃣ Improved customer experience. Continuous product innovation is vital for delivering an exceptional customer experience, meeting evolving user expectations, and driving adoption and retention. 👉Read Part 3 of our blog series on Optimising Operational Efficiency and learn how your business can benefit from innovation. • Still manual testing? Now is the time to speed up your SaaS deployment with automation 🚀 The best teams and businesses embrace automation as part of their software development practice. They share the following three characteristics: 🏆 They improve the process; they don’t just automate it. Focusing on what you’re trying to achieve and how to best automate that vs automating bad processes means you keep the good and build on it. 🏆 They know that testing starts at the beginning, not the end. Proactively planning testing requirements at the start of development, alongside roadmap features, means there’s time to automate as much as possible. 🏆 They balance short-term and long-term improvements. Focusing on streamlining key processes in the short term frees up your team to explore higher-value activities such as improving and automating end-to-end processes in the longer term. It’s worth remembering that investors look for automation 🔎 Why? Because it’s critical to building and shipping robust, reliable SaaS software that your future customers expect. It’s an essential part of your growth strategy. 👉Read Part 2 of our blog series on Optimising Operational Efficiency and discover how your business can benefit from automation. • 🆘 Is your SaaS platform development over-reliant on manual processes and burdened by significant costs? Here are three things to do next… As your product evolves (by building in more features, functionality, and integrations) so do development and infrastructure costs - especially if you’re still relying heavily on manual processes. Keep your business agile and efficient by embracing opportunities to automate business processes and system testing. These cost efficiencies can fund innovation and customer acquisition – ensuring your scaleup keeps growing. So, where do you begin? 1️⃣ Start by auditing your current processes, workflows, and systems to identify areas where tasks are duplicated or redundant. 2️⃣ Next look for routine and regular tasks that would benefit from automation – for example, data entry, report generation, customer onboarding and support. 3️⃣ Finally, review end-to-end processes and consider if there’s a better way to achieve your goal. This helps avoid automating the suboptimal process. Re-engineering business processes doesn’t have to mean costly programmes and throwing out legacy systems (and disenfranchising the teams who built them). Work with what you have; keep what's good and build on it. 👉Read Part 2 of our blog series on Optimising Operational Efficiency and find out how your business can benefit from automation.
