Bicester-based Hardide Coatings struck a 10-year agreement with a major aerospace customer for coating cargo door parts that is projected to generate up to £8m of production revenues. London’s Tern PLC - we back growing IoT companies raised £400,000 through a placing to invest further in its portfolio of Internet of Things businesses. And also in aerospace, congratulations to Velocity Composites plc, the Burnley-based supplier of composite material kits, which reported a 40% jump in annual revenues. Cumbria’s James Cropper Advanced Materials is partnering with the University of Oxford to develop a portfolio of next-generation battery electrodes. Oxford’s Scancell raised more than £11m through a placing, subscription and retail offer to fund the further development of its cancer vaccine SCIB1 as a treatment for advanced melanoma. And congratulations to cosmetics group Warpaint London PLC which is adding to its portfolio with the acquisition of Brand Architekts PLC, owner of beauty brands Skinny Tan and Dirty Works. This is what regional growth looks like. Imagine what more small companies could achieve if liquidity was supercharged, risk appetite rallied and the cost and complexity of reporting slashed. Forty years ago today, a revolution began for retail shareholders. The first day’s trading for British Telecom shares on December 3 1984 gave many of the 2.1m members of the public who had been allocated stock a taste of equity ownership for the first time. Among them, thousands of BT staff benefited too. Can we revive this type of “connected capitalism”, so that more people are minded to buy shares in their employer or in a company whose product they rate, like Greggs for its pasties or Games Workshop Group plc for its figurines? It should be a hallmark policy for a Labour Government. Retail share trading is over-regulated and under-marketed. Why not: Use the Financial Conduct Authority’s Advice and Guidance Boundary Review to get more people investing and taking some measured risk; Reform the ISA regime so that UK investors don’t get a tax break for investing in US stocks such as NVIDIA and £300bn is no longer sat mouldering in cash accounts; Create simpler workplace share-saving schemes; Overhaul the “plumbing” of share ownership so that investors and companies can communicate more easily and cheaply; Introduce financial literacy lessons and investment clubs into schools to empower the next generation.
