In our newsletter we include a 'language fact file' - facts about a different language each month, we also give you some basic phrases to try and learn. This month we give you facts about Turkish. To sign up to our newsletter simply click the link below: https://lnkd.in/gyYpPiJw Language fact file: Turkish is an official language in: Turkey and Cyprus. Number of native speakers: approximately 75 to 80 million. Learn some: Thank people in Turkish by saying Teşekkürler – pronounced ‘te-sheh-ku-ler’. Fast facts: Turkish is officially part of a language group, which includes Azerbaijani and Kazakh. Some linguists believe that it is part of an even bigger central Asian language group and even has links with Japanese. Learners of Japanese and Turkish have noted many similarities between the two languages, mostly in terms of their structures. In Turkish, many jokes revolve around two characters: Temel and his best friend Dursun. There are hundreds of jokes featuring these two characters, and sometimes Temel’s wife, Fatma. The characters are from the Black Sea coastal area, where the people are said to be funny and witty. Avid readers of the Monthly View may remember that there is a whistled form of Turkish in the hilly province of Giresun, some villagers developed this system to communicate quickly over long distances and tricky terrain. It is 400 years old and still used by approximately 10,000 people, according to the Turkish government. #Turkish #LanguageFacts

Every month in our newsletter, we get to know a bit more about one of our linguists. This month, meet Kutal Mete Tekin, an interpreter working in Turkish. To sign up to our newsletter simply click the link below: https://lnkd.in/gyYpPiJw The Linguist’s Story Tell us about the work you do for TLS. I work as an interpreter for TLS. My preferred way of explaining that is being the bridge between different cultures. Nowadays anyone can use a translate app and roughly communicate with anyone, but those apps only do a basic job and cannot translate the nuances in the language. Because most of the time a language is not as straightforward as a mathematical formula, so what someone wants to say may not be clear to a computer programme. What's been your favourite project at TLS? I don't think I have a single favourite project but I can say that I enjoy the medical calls far more. In medicine every patient is different and that means every consultation we do is different. It keeps you on your toes. What has been your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge is unfortunately something that happens quite often. When someone is in need of help desperately, whether that being about housing, medical or personal security, as an interpreter it is hard not to connect with them emotionally. I know that the professional we are connecting them with will help through whatever problem they have but the challenge is when I hang up and start another call with another client, I have to let those feelings go as well. It is possible, and you certainly get used to it, but sometimes at the end of the day I think back to that call and whether that person has received the help they needed or not. Can you tell us about a time your work has made a difference to someone’s life? One time I was interpreting for a medical call and I noticed that the patient's family member, who had acted as an interpreter for them on their previous appointment, had misinterpreted something. They thought the patient was supposed to get chemotherapy and they worried for a month until their follow up appointment that they had cancer. Turns out what the healthcare professional said was cryotherapy, which is a much simpler procedure. I will always remember the happiness in the patient's voice when they realised there was a mistranslation, and they actually don't have cancer. I think this story also proves the importance of using professional interpreters instead of friends and family because as much as that family member wanted to help them, they ended up giving them a month long of anxiety due to misinterpreting. Tell us something interesting about you. I'm also a part-time motorsport photographer. I attend events around the world and take pictures of cars on the racetrack.

'Shanah tovah' to those who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah! Rosh Hashanah means 'head of the year' and is a special festival that celebrates Jewish New Year. The festival dates vary from year to year. In 2024, it begins on Wednesday 2 October and ends on Friday 4 October. The dates of Jewish festivals come from the Hebrew Calendar, so the Jewish New Year begins in autumn, as opposed to on 1 January. #Shanahtovah #RoshHashanah
