A growing number of tech companies now say they’ve developed AI technologies that will help end wars. But experts say the assumptions baked into these tools risk repeating the mistakes of the past. So what are these tools? How do they work? And what are the risks when they are applied to deadly conflict? #AI #artificialintelligence #wars #technology #middleeast
About us
TBIJ is the UK’s largest non-profit investigative news organisation – we’re not on the hunt for clicks and we don’t have shareholders to please. Co-founded by Elaine Potter, one of the female pioneers of investigative journalism, the work we undertake has two purposes: to expose injustices through our deep investigative reporting, and to help spark meaningful change in the world. Even if you’ve never come across us before, there’s a high chance you’ve read our work. Since 2010, we’ve been working with newsrooms across the world to expose corruption and injustice on an international scale. From the LA Times and Die Welt, to Vice and the BBC, we co-publish with our industry partners to make sure the stories get in front of affected communities and those wielding the power to incite change.

An “ethical” dairy farm backed by Chrissie Hynde – lead singer of rock band the Pretenders – has underpaid some of its workers and left some of its animals to suffer through neglect and fatal injuries. The Ahimsa Dairy Foundation claims to offer an alternative to commercial milk production and the brutal processes it can involve. But insiders allege that “what’s being delivered in practice is something that is probably worse than 90% of the commercial farms out there that they are claiming to be better than.” Hynde told us she was “horrified and heartbroken” to hear of the allegations and will be withdrawing her support immediately. 🚨 BREAKING: TBIJ and the Guardian are unmasking a Briton who helped manage hundreds of millions of pounds allegedly looted from the Syrian people. The Briton worked on behalf of Rifaat al-Assad, uncle of Bashar and a man known as the “butcher of Hama”. Ginette Blondel was banned from positions of financial responsibility for 9 years and fined £210,000 after Guernsey’s financial regulator said she had repeatedly broken Guernsey law in her work for clients – one of which was the Assad family. What does this tell us? The ease with which Assad – a suspected war criminal – funnelled hundreds of millions of pounds allegedly embezzled from Syrian public funds in Europe shines a light on the continent’s lax approach to money laundering … … but also highlights how the UK, its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories have provided the services that enable some of the world’s most infamous kleptocrats. NEW STORY: Beef is a leading driver of deforestation in Brazil, responsible for razing the Amazon and other vital ecosystems. But it wouldn’t reach supermarket shelves without several different players – including global shipping companies. Over a two year period, major shipping firms transported more than half a million tonnes of beef and leather from slaughterhouses linked to forest destruction in Brazil. Firms including MSC and Maersk shipped products for JBS, Marfrig and Minerva (Brazil’s biggest three beef companies) whose supplier networks in the Amazon and Cerrado ecosystems include farms that have deforested. This has prompted calls for greater accountability from the shipping industry for the environmental damage linked to its cargo. 🚨Cases of trans people losing access to their hormone treatment on the NHS are on the rise. Trans people often get prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a form of gender-affirming care. Studies have found HRT to be a safe treatment and its positive benefits to the wellbeing of trans people usually outweigh the risks. But some are reportedly having their treatment refused or withdrawn by their GPs – sometimes after years of receiving it or even when the prescription had been recommended by a specialist. However, no official data is currently being collected to monitor the prevalence of this issue. Withdrawing an HRT prescription can significantly affect an individual’s mental health and physical well-being. Some GPs declining the service say they don’t have enough resources – or that they don’t feel qualified enough to provide the care. #transhealth #transrights #NHS #UKnews

Immediately after Donald Trump won the US election, postal orders of abortion pills spiked across the country. The prospect of another Trump presidency appears to have prompted a fear among many Americans that their access to abortion and contraception may soon be drastically reduced. But the issue stretches beyond US borders. Around the world, hundreds of millions of women who had no say in Trump’s election could lose vital health services because of his decisions. Central to Trump’s global influence on women’s health is a policy called the Global Gag Rule. It says that any organisation receiving US aid money must agree not to perform or promote abortion. Ironically, research has linked the rule to a fall in contraception use and a rise in abortions. Read more 👇 #Trump #contraception #abortion #womenshealth #America #plannedparenthood
