About us

SWEDA is a regional charity supporting people affected by eating disorders. Set up in 1992 by a parents, SWEDA has provided a range of services since then for people struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating & compulsive overeating. Our services also provide support to family members and friends engaged in the difficult task of supporting someone close to them. SWEDA has recently been awarded a substantial 5-year Reaching Communities Big Lottery Grant, from which we are looking to project fund a comprehensive Eating Disorders service across Somerset. The provision of high quality, professional Support Services is at the centre of this plan. These will include a Support & Guidance sessions, College-based Community Support, Support Groups and Counselling Service. In addition we do Training sessions and workshops across the county.

Updates

  • Thanks to our community, we were able to provide specialist support to 156 children and young people in 2024. Behind that statistic are 170 individual children and young people affected by eating disorders: 170 families struggling to access professional support through any other route. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, we have been able to offer hope and tools for recovery through our 1-2-1 work with each of these young people. To help us reach out to more children and young people in 2025, please consider supporting our Christmas Appeal. You can donate here: https://lnkd.in/eHBQ7bxU

  • Never too late to join the #SpotifyWrapped bandwagon 😄 As we bring 2024 to a close, we wanted to take a moment to look back over the key moments of the past year: 1 🚀 We kicked off with Eating Disorders Awareness Week in February, relaunching ourselves as SWEDA, to reflect how we’re reaching new areas of the South and West. 2 🗺️ New horizons: Well done to the new team in Oxfordshire, who have been hard at work setting up the new service in various mental health hubs throughout the county. 3 🧠 Raising awareness in the workplace: We also launched our new Lunch & Learn workshops. These are for businesses wanting to create a safe place for conversations about mental health at work. (Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eH3YjZYn) 4 ☎️ A new volunteer venture this year: A huge ‘thank you’ to the counsellors in training who’ve been helping us with check in calls for people on our waiting lists. 5 🏙️ Over in Bristol: Our Perinatal Champion started a new project working with Mothers for Mothers to provide specialist support to new mothers affected by eating disorders. 6 🌻 And in Somerset: We’d like to thank our counsellors, our Somerset Support Workers and our Children and Young People’s team for their unwavering dedication and hard work over the past year. 🩷 Lastly, here’s to you, our SWEDA community. Thanks for getting involved in the latest research projects, sharing your recovery stories, and supporting our work with your donations 🩷 We’ve got some exciting developments coming up in 2025 to bring our SWEDA community together - stay tuned by subscribing to our mailing list via our website!

  • The earlier we can get support to young people, the more likely serious illness can be prevented, and the more likely they are to fully recover. Please donate to SWEDA’s Christmas Appeal so we can speed up support and help more children and young people next year. To support our Christmas Appeal, visit https://lnkd.in/eHBQ7bxU
