✨ Last night, our cyber community gathered together to hear from two insightful speakers ✨ 🧠 Benjamin Ellis' (SocialOptic) talk on "Hacking Neural Networks" revealed how hackers exploit psychological weaknesses to gain control, exfiltrate data, and cover their tracks—a thought-provoking reminder of the human element in cybersecurity. 🟣Our cluster director, Hani Momeninia, shared actionable insights on navigating complex cloud environments, mastering incident response, and bridging the gap between red and blue teams to enhance security on his talk, "A War Story of Cloud Purple Teaming. The excitement didn't stop there. We also celebrated the winners of the 2024 SCSC Capture The Flag competition, which was held last month at the Login Business Lounge in Camberley in collaboration with BAE Systems Digital Intelligence and support from Surrey County Council. 🏆A very big congratulations to Tom C. who won first prize for their amazing performance. 👏 A special shoutout to Leonardo Forchini and RHUL Team 2 (Royal Holloway Cybersecurity Society) for winning second and third place respectively. Apparently, your emotions make you more susceptible to cyber attacks. Last night, I attended a series of talks hosted by Surrey Cyber Security Cluster at the Login Business Lounge. We were started off with a talk given by Benjamin Ellis, CEO of SocialOptic, on hacking neural networks. Essentially, his talk was about how hackers make good use of human psychology and behaviours to target their weaknesses and how our emotions makes us susceptible to phishing attacks. Part of his talk involved giving us a series of phishing emails and showed us how to adapt different elements of the email to make it more convincing. My favourite part of the talk was when he explained the HALT method that criminals use; Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired. These 4 states make humans less aware and more vulnerable to attacks. Following that talk, we had Hani Momeninia, founder of Invest Cyber and Director of the Surrey Cyber Security Cluster, who gave us an insight into what Purple Teaming is and the challenges faced by using cloud security. He spoke about how a lot of companies are switching onto using cloud networks instead of servers and how just having a Red Team and Blue Team is not enough to defend against cyber attacks anymore. More companies are moving towards Purple Team Dynamics which include Cloud Architects, Security Operations Centre Analysts, Compliance and Risk Management Teams, Cloud Service Providers and Shadowing. Both talks were incredibly detailed and I have not done them much justice with these brief paragraphs but it was amazing to see how interlinked humans are with these systems and to gain a valuable insight into the career paths available in cybersecurity. My favourite takeaway from these talks was that no one in the world is safe. Systems get attacked left right and centre everyday and as cyber professionals, you need to think like a criminal to be able to defeat one. Or you know, just hire a formal criminal. In all seriousness, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire event, not only the talks but also the opportunity to connect with the speakers before and after the event. As someone who is starting out in her cybersecurity journey, I found Hani Momeninia and Benjamin Ellis's advice very useful. I look forward to attending more of these talks in the future and potentially being a speaker too one day. #cybersecurity #university #computerscience #cloudsecurity #security #networks
