  • It's been a pleasure working with Simon Braschi and Simon Baron-Cohen on a new WordPress website for the Autism Research Centre (ARC). https://lnkd.in/e-3bxJAS The ARC was founded in 1998 to conduct research that both deepens our understanding of autism and has real-world relevance for improving the health and wellbeing of autistic people and their families. This is a busy website, used by autistic people and their families, teachers, and clinicians. Now: - Editing pages and adding content is much easier for the ARC team. - Search has been improved so information can be found quickly and easily including across the hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles. - Accessibility has been baked into the design, improving the user experience. Have a look: https://lnkd.in/e-3bxJAS #WebsiteDesign #WebsiteDevelopment #Accessibility #Autism

  • We are as light as a feather, as happy as an angel, as merry as a school-boy! Yes, it’s time to close the studio for Christmas. With a thankful heart, we wish a merry Christmas to our wonderful clients, our brilliant, hardworking team and all our friends and acquaintances. See you on the 2nd January 2025! The photo is of The Guildhall in Cambridge Market Square - where you'll find our office.

  • The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities is on 3rd December: https://lnkd.in/dkK3MGF To support the aims of this day and help raise awareness around inclusion we are sharing a resource that we developed with CBM Christian Blind Mission called the Inclusive Participation Toolbox. In the Toolbox, there is practical support for making your day-to-day work more inclusive to people with disabilities as well as helpful background reading such as what disability is, what are the models of disability, and what are the barriers to participation. Have a look at the Toolbox: https://lnkd.in/eHcDPVM4 We strive to bring down digital barriers and build websites and web apps that are inclusive for everyone. You can read more about our approach on our website. https://lnkd.in/emBPkVXU #Accessibility #Inclusion #WebsiteDesign #IDPD2024

  • Every 39 seconds, there is a cyber attack somewhere on the web *. National Computer Security Day is on 30th November and it's a reminder for us all to think about how we keep our data (and our customers' data) safe online. Today we'll share some reading from The National Cyber Security Centre on one important part of security: passwords. There are three things you can do: 1) Get a password manager. This guide will help you to choose the right password manager for your organisation: https://lnkd.in/gKfPK3xG 2) Review your approach to managing passwords in your organisation: https://lnkd.in/gV8-9vT 3) Understand what makes a good password. No matter how many times we're asked to do it, it's not one capital letter, one number, and one special character! A reasonably long password is all that matters and 3 words are easier to remember than a random string of characters. https://lnkd.in/dv6EKkw We are a Cyber Essentials Plus accredited agency and we take data privacy seriously. We advise clients on how best to process data online and we implement best practice methods to ensure data security. We’ve worked on projects where data protection and cyber security have been key elements. For example, building a Covid 19 app for NHS Test and Trace. You can read more about this project on our website: https://lnkd.in/eJKSccSa If security on your website is something you’d like to know more about please get in touch. * If you'd like more terrifying figures about cyber attacks, read this blog post from TechJury! https://lnkd.in/dEhP34W

  • Today, Simon Jones is at the Cambridge Maths School to talk to the Computer Science A Level students about web development. Simon is talking to the students about: - the tech we use including HTML, CSS, PHP, Laravel, and Symfony. - the importance of accessibility and building websites so people with disabilities can use them - our HTML-first approach for accessible front ends - some examples of projects we've worked on including the Speak Up to Beat Covid app for NHS Test and Trace. (You can read more about this project on our website https://lnkd.in/eJKSccSa) Thank you to the Maths School for inviting us to talk to the next generation of coders! #WebsiteDesign #WebsiteDevelopment #ComputerScience

  • Our team are encouraged to take time off work to support causes that are important to them. Last week, our Client Services Director Emma Lane volunteered for the Elizabeth Coteman fund. The Elizabeth Coteman Fund was set up in memory of Emma's mum and is dedicated to supporting patients and their families affected by pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the toughest cancer to diagnose, treat, and survive. Emma spent the day at Waitrose fundraising and awareness raising for the charity. And earlier this year, our front-end developer Jamie Curran built a new website for Wicklow Pride: the home of events, advocacy and support for the LGBTQ+ community in the Garden of Ireland. https://lnkd.in/eEA9thf6 #Volunteering #GivingBack #Community

  • For the last 6 months or so we’ve been very busy working on a project with the wonderful RNIB. Today, we are delighted to celebrate the launch of the RNIB Bookshare website 🎉 Bookshare offers over 1.2 million curriculum materials in a range of accessible formats including ePub, PDF and electronic braille, for educators across the UK supporting learners with print disabilities including vision impairment, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. The website also hosts the Curriculum framework for children and young people with vision impairment (CFVI) resource hub. There were five main factors to the project:  - Discovery and consultancy - Build a new platform - Integrate systems - Improve usability and accessibility - Migrate data With RNIB Bookshare reaching over 58,000 users across 14,500 schools, colleges and universities, a big part of the project was to ensure a seamless transition from the old system to the new one. The Bookshare website operated on a legacy platform, i.e. where the technology was no longer supported. We custom-built a modern platform in Laravel. This provides a solid foundation for the future where the service can grow and evolve. We migrated large amounts of data into the new system, including all the book, institution, and user data. Our custom-built system had to integrate with other technologies that use Bookshare such as Dolphin EasyReader. EasyReader is a popular mobile app allowing users to read books in their preferred reading format from Bookshare on their smartphone or tablet. We built an API so EasyReader can interface with the new platform. We improved the website to make it easier to use and more accessible for users. Our mantra was evolution, not revolution. We didn’t want to dramatically change user journeys to ensure a smooth launch. For example, we worked hard to ensure the first-time login process is straightforward for users, an area that can be clunky and hard to use when websites relaunch. The RNIB team can manage page content using Craft CMS – Bookshare’s new content management system. Craft CMS is accessible both in the front end for website visitors and the back end for RNIB admin staff. It's been a pleasure working with the RNIB team on this complex and important project. We've focussed on making the website simple to use and accessible. We believe in building a web for all, and the whole team values working on projects that have a positive impact in the world. A big thank you to everyone involved in this project! The RNIB project team: Claire Cawkwell, Rochelle Pretsell, Caroline, Kat Stoner, and James Bartlett. And from Studio 24: our development team Simon Jones, Gareth Trinkwon, Zuzana Kunckova, Nicola, and Jamie Curran; Isaac for design and content strategy; Alan Isaacson for the hosting infrastructure; and Claire McDermott our Head of Delivery. https://lnkd.in/enPYTB9K
