For the final video in our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign, we spoke to Medway-based Emergency Medical Advisor, Katie Bugg, who recently gave the ultimate gift - the gift of life. ❤️ When Katie received a 999 call about a patient who wasn’t breathing, she guided the patient’s wife through CPR. Thanks to Katie's calm and clear instructions and effective CPR, the patient survived. ✨ A heartfelt thank you to all our incredible colleagues for sharing the 12 gifts they’ve recently been able to give. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2025! 🎉

About us
South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is part of the National Health Service (NHS). We respond to 999 calls from the public and healthcare professionals. We cover a diverse geographical area of 3,600 square miles (Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent, Surrey, and North East Hampshire), which includes densely populated urban areas, sparsely populated rural areas and some of the busiest stretches of motorway in the country. We have over 4,000 staff working across 119 sites in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Almost 90 per cent of our workforce is made up of operational staff – those caring for patients either face to face, or over the phone at one of our Emergency Operations Centres. Our patients range from the critically ill and injured who need specialist treatment, to those with minor healthcare needs who can be treated at home or in the community. As well as a 999 service, we also provide the NHS 111 service for Kent, Medway and Sussex (together with IC24) for when it’s urgent but not life-threatening.

For the penultimate day of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign, we’re shining a spotlight on Medway Make Ready Centre Operative, Michelle. 🎁 Michelle gives the invaluable gift of ensuring our vehicles are fully prepared and ready for our crews to respond when it matters most. 🚑✨ Her work behind the scenes plays a vital role in supporting our teams to deliver care to our patients. 💙

Day ten of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign saw us hear from 111 Health Advisor Ellie Chapman, who shared how she recently gave the gift of listening and compassion to a patient in crisis. 💚 The patient, who was feeling hopeless and considering ending their life, found comfort and reassurance during the call. Ellie helped them feel calmer and safer at home while ensuring a crew was on their way to provide further support. A heartfelt reminder of the incredible difference our colleagues make every day.🌟

For day nine of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign, we spoke to Mel Baird who is a mental health practitioner for the Trust. 💚 Mel and her mental health practitioner colleagues are a vital part of the SECAmb team all year round, but are especially essential at this time of the year, which can be particularly challenging for people with mental health problems. Mel, who works across both our 999 and 111 services, has enjoyed a varied career as a nun, teacher, and most recently a nurse. 👩⚕️ Thank you for everything you and your colleagues do for our patients, Mel. 🌟❤️

🎄✨ Day eight of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign features Medway-based Emergency Medical Advisor, Chantelle Garvey, who successfully helped to deliver a healthy baby boy, who was initially born not breathing.👶 Thanks to Chantelle and the side-by-side clinician support, mum, dad, and their little one were able to spend Christmas together! 🎁 A huge thank you to all our frontline teams! 🙌 From our emergency medical advisors to our specialist paramedics, every team member plays a vital role in responding to the varied needs of our patients. 💪🚑

For day seven of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign, we spoke to Crawley community first responder (CFR) and emergency responder (ER), Andrew, who is one of a team of more than 400 volunteers who are proud to support our frontline teams. 🌟 As well as the CFR and ER roles, chaplains and governors freely provide their time to help us and, of course, our patients. 🙏 Our two teams of emergency responders – volunteers who receive additional training to respond on blue lights – have attended in excess of 2,500 of our most serious incidents since their launch some 18 months ago. Thank you to all our volunteers. 🙌 From serving teas and coffees on our welfare vehicles out on the road, to being the first on scene of a cardiac arrest – you are highly appreciated. ❤️

For day six of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign, we spoke to paramedic, Elliot, who moved to the UK from New Zealand a couple of years ago. Typically working 12-hour shifts, Elliot will book on at Tangmere Make Ready Centre before responding to patients across our West Sussex operational area.🌍 While the majority of our paramedics join us having completed a three-year university degree programme in Paramedic Science, we now offer an apprentice programme. The programme, delivered in partnership with the University of Cumbria, sees colleagues complete their paramedic education over a two-year period as an apprentice while working for SECAmb.🚑 Thank you to all our frontline teams.🙏 From our newest emergency care support workers to our specialist paramedics, everyone plays a vital role responding to the varied needs of our patients.❤️

Day five of our #SECAmbChristmasGifts campaign sees us look at how end of life care requires a particularly compassionate approach to patient care, not only for patients but also their families. 👨👩👧👦 We typically consider end of life to be the patients' last year of life, but a patient may have been ill and in need of specialist care – palliative care – for some time. People's needs at this time will vary very much, and our End of Life Care Leads, Jen and Imogen, as well as colleagues across the trust, support this kind and caring approach as they support patients and their families at this challenging time of year. 💙
