Enough is enough. There are some really shocking statistics that I'm only just learning about abuse. First Mel B bravely told her story in front of 600+ people at LegalGeek. Highlighting the shocking statistic that 1 in 4 women suffer domestic abuse. Then Hannah Strawbridge's post that almost a THIRD of female surgeons had been sexually assaulted by a colleague, and TWO THIRDS reported being sexually harassed. Surely not in the legal profession though, right? Wrong. Research by Culture Shift published in 2023 has shown that nearly 2 in 5 lawyers (38%) have experienced bullying, discrimination or harassment at work, with more people of colour and women experiencing these. The International Bar Association found in 2018 that one in three female respondents had been sexually harassed in a workplace context. Spend 5 minutes researching this and you will find countless other studies with similar statistics. What makes these reports particularly shocking, sad, and impactful for me was something Mel B said in her story. Work was a real escape for her, a safe space from the daily abuse. I think that's one reason Hannah's post really hit home for me. Are these actually safe spaces for women? The stats suggest not enough is being done to ensure they are. The reality is that over half of the human race may not feel safe: - at home - at work - on the streets. I feel helpless reading all of this, no doubt 1/1000 of the feeling for those impacted. honestly I'm not sure what to do, but I wanted to speak up at the very least. I've learnt a huge amount from Mel B's story and posts like Hannah's, they've had a significant impact on me, so my hope is that by - sharing these stories, - sharing our widespread condemnation of abuse and harassment, - sharing the perspectives of victims where possible, we can increase awareness and understanding and begin to make a difference and create the right culture of prevention and support p.s. please see the comments shortly for further information and links.
