Powering the energy transition by unleashing the power of metal-organic frameworks (#MOFs)
About us
Promethean Particles is a UK-based, global pioneer, leading the industrial-scale manufacture of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The Company is primarily focused on developing the use of MOFs in the fight against climate change, particularly for carbon capture, water harvesting, and gas storage applications. When compared to existing technologies, MOF-based carbon capture has the potential to deliver significant advantages; increased energy-efficiency, lower process complexity, smaller operating footprint, and an improved EHS profile. Promethean has developed a range of patented continuous-flow reactors, which dramatically improve throughput and cost whilst increasing process reliability and consistency. The company operates a 1,000 tonnes per year reactor at its site in Nottingham, UK – the world’s largest continuous multi-nanomaterial manufacturing plant. Promethean is collaborating with several different organisations to test MOFs in real-world environments and measure carbon capture effectiveness. Results from completed studies have been exciting, demonstrating that MOFs can significantly increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of CCS and leading to further projects. Larger-scale MOF-based CCS demonstration units are now planned on the path to full-scale implementation. Contact us for more information and follow us on Twitter for our latest updates! @ProParticles

One of the best things about having a multicultural team is that hosting a Christmas potluck lunch means we get a fantastic mix of cosmopolitan food to enjoy! When our staff had a festive get-together last week, we all got a chance to sample Polish pierogi dumplings, a traditional Estonian potato salad, Ghanaian plantain chips, Vietnamese summer rolls, and Thai-style satay skewers - alongside traditional pasties, pasta salad and lots of cakes! We've nearly doubled the size of our team this year so this was a perfect opportunity to gather our staff together to get to know each other better - starting with some of their favourite foods! 🥟 🍲 🥗 🍛 🍽️ #ChristmasLunch #ChristmasCheer

Since we closed our Series A investment round earlier this year, one of our new investors Mercia Ventures visited our site in #Nottingham to film a video showcasing our work. In the full video, our chief executive officer, James Stephenson, talks to Dr Marina Fuentes - investment manager at Mercia Ventures - about our MOF #manufacturing capabilities, our work in developing these incredible materials for use in #carboncapture, and how we will be using the funds to grow the company. The shortened clip below focuses on our prototype carbon capture system, which we use to evaluate the effectiveness of our MOFs at adsorbing carbon dioxide (CO2). Our R&D manager, Paul Kirkman, expertly explains how the system works and demonstrates the performance of our MOF. #MOFs #innovation
⚙️ Nottingham's Promethean Particles has a mission to capture carbon on a grand scale through metal organic frameworks (MOFs) R&D Manager, Paul Kirkman demonstrates the power of MOFs with Promethean's prototype carbon capture demonstrator unit. Mercia Ventures and Aramco Ventures co-led a Series A £8million investment round into the business in August of this year. 🌠 We're a new member of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association! 🌠 ❌ We've heard from many people working in CO2-emitting industries that mature #carboncapture technologies (liquid, amine-based systems) require large physical footprints, pose health and safety concerns, and are too expensive for commercial adoption. It's clear that an alternative technology is needed for carbon capture to be deployed at the scale needed to meet #decarbonisation goals. ✅ MOF-based carbon capture can offer significantly lower capital and operating costs than amine-based systems; has the potential for smaller, modular system design; and has fewer handling risks due to the solid nature of the MOF adsorbent. At Promethean Particles we recognise that addressing the global challenge of #climatechange with MOF-based carbon capture, means MOFs will need to be manufactured reliably, cost-effectively, and in significant volumes. This is why we are applying our proprietary manufacturing technology to 𝙪𝙣𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙈𝙊𝙁𝙨. 🤝 Through our collaborations with engineering firms and carbon-emitting companies, we're providing a commercially-viable source of MOF adsorbents for MOF-based carbon capture to become a reality. We're excited to work with the CCSA and its other members to accelerate the commercial deployment of this solution. #energytransition #innovation

👨🎓 We love developing new talent so we're thrilled to announce that our new starter, James Dale, is taking a year out of his degree course in Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham, to spend his industrial placement with us as a process engineer. 🏭 James' work at Promethean Particles sees him working on prototype carbon capture units that house our MOFs. His focus is on the application development of MOF-based carbon capture, aiming to obtain data to inform us on how MOFs can be best deployed at scale to achieve decarbonisation goals. 💬 He said: “While I’ve been primarily working on carbon capture, MOFs can be used for many different applications, including water harvesting, so I’m interested to see where else they can be used in the future.” #newstarter #MOFs #carboncapture #decarbonisation #Nottingham

🎉 Please welcome the second of our new starters that we're excited to announce this week - Andy Jones recently joined the Promethean Particles team as a synthetic chemist after completing his PhD in Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. Prior to that, he obtained his MSc degree in Green Chemistry and Sustainable Industrial Technology from the University of York. 🌲 From his studies, it's clear that using chemistry to develop green and sustainable technologies is important to Andy - an approach he'll continue to take in his role with us. Andy will be building upon the knowledge and experience of MOFs he obtained during his PhD to develop scalable routes of producing high-quality MOFs in our lab, which can then be scaled-up by our engineering and operations team. 💬 Andy said, “MOFs have been reported academically for several decades, but they’ve only really gained traction in industry over the past 15 years or so, so this is certainly a very good time for me to be working here.” #newstarter #manufacturing #MOFs #Nottingham

📢 We're delighted to announce another addition to our growing team! Please join us in welcoming David Van Gelder Adjar, who recently joined Promethean Particles as a process development engineer. David previously worked as a technology project and process engineer in the lubricants industry before seeking a new challenge - which has brought him to us! David's new role will see him working with our R&D and operations functions to scale-up our MOF manufacturing processes, aiming to increase production volumes safely, efficiently and cost-effectively, all while maintaining high product quality. 🗨️ He said, “I enjoy this type of work because it gives me the opportunity to bring new ideas into a company that is doing something different and revolutionary.” #newstarter #manufacturing #MOFs #Nottingham

📣 Today our laboratory technician Kale Cooke is presenting a poster at the Materials Chemistry Poster Symposium at Burlington House in London, an event organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry. ✔️ After his abstract was successfully accepted by the organising committee, Kale is showcasing Promethean Particles’ work on the scalable forming of MOF powders into pellet-like structures for industrial application into #carboncapture. 💡 The shaping of #MOFs into these solid forms not only improves handling safety at scale, but also reduces the likelihood of MOF loss during use, and reduces energy-wasting pressure drop during gas separation processes. However, there is a risk that additional processing can lead to a drop in the MOF's uptake performance. 🏭 Kale's work, and the results he is presenting today, demonstrates a maintenance of our MOF's performance throughout each stage of our scalable #manufacturing process, as well as after extended periods of use in its target application. A very positive story for MOF-based carbon capture technology! 👏 Keep up the great work, Kale! 👏
