Capturing the Future: Behind the Scenes at Greengate Yesterday was an exciting day at our Greengate Works site as we welcomed Luke Dell to film content for Cadent Gas Limited Gas’ ‘Made with Hydrogen’ series. ‘Made with Hydrogen’ will look at how manufacturing companies across the UK can utilise hydrogen as a low carbon alternative fuel. If you are interested in Pilkington United Kingdom Limited UK’s investment in making our manufacturing process more sustainable, then take a look at Cadent Gas’ #SustainabilityInsiders Podcast with NSG Group’s Category Manager for Energy, Chris Dye. Neil Syder, Managing Director of Pilkington UK, said “Securing a reliable, cost-effective supply of hydrogen at our Greengate Works site will enable us to transition from producing low-carbon glass on a run-by-run basis to making it our standard manufacturing procedure. This marks a crucial step toward delivering carbon-free buildings by making low-carbon glass a more routine specification choice for architects and specifiers.” It was an exciting day, and we look forward to the first episode of the ‘Made with Hydrogen’ series to release on 7th of January! #PilkingtonPilkingtonPilkingtonPilkington United Kingdom Limited #NSGNSGNSGNSG Group #Sustainability #Hydrogen #Greenbusiness #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalImpact #SustainableFuture #NetZero #SustainableBusiness

About us
Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG Group, is one of the global leaders in glass and glazing technology. We manufacture architectural and automotive glass in St Helens, where the company was established in 1826. In 1959 Sir Alastair Pilkington invented the Float Process, which remains the world standard process for flat glass manufacture. Our industry-leading glass coating facility, also in St Helens, gives our glass properties such as Solar Control, Low Emissivity, Electrical Conductivity, and even Bird Safety! The Pilkington brand is synonymous with technical excellence and service in the glass industry. We distribute our glass to an international customer base, either as stock or as bespoke processed products, direct from St Helens or through our network of nationwide branches. Our parent company, NSG Group, has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels and has been certified as a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As part of this, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We've been taking huge strides in decarbonisation, but being part of an energy-intensive industry, we must focus on how else we can make change. NSG Group are always looking for the next generation of glass manufacturing and coating technology experts to ensure we remain Best-in-Glass. Our low carbon glass, Pilkington Mirai™, named ‘New Product of the Year’ at the 2024 G Awards! Up against seven other products, Pilkington Mirai™ fought off stiff competition in its category, fully demonstrating the sector-leading innovation behind it. As the lowest carbon glass of its kind (verified to have 52% less embodied carbon when compared to standard float glass), the submission highlighted progress made in ground breaking trials of alternative low carbon fuels. Neil Syder, Managing Director of Pilkington UK, said: “We are delighted that Pilkington Mirai™ has been awarded ‘New Product of the Year’, and it’s very fitting that we won with a product that has been developed through so much collaboration between many different teams within the business and external partners. People have worked incredibly hard to drive the development of Pilkington Mirai™ forward together to deliver success, and this award shows that the industry recognises the contribution of this work.” G Awards 2025 Glass Futures #glass #glazing #fenestration #innovation #alternativefuels #recycling #renewglass #makechange #towardsasustainablefuture #pilkingtonuk #nsggroup #madeinuk #ukmade #madeinbritain

Had a productive day at Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, delivering practical advice and training on managing regulatory inspections by the HSE. The group’s engagement and participation were fantastic—great to see, as this is such a critical topic to master. How you approach an inspection can set the tone for your relationship with the inspector and significantly shape the outcome, especially following an accident. A key takeaway: always keep the context in mind. An inspection isn’t just a friendly chat—it could lead to a potential criminal investigation or prosecution. A big thank you to David Ash for the kind invitation—it was an absolute pleasure working with your team. And what a treat to present in your very own lecture theatre! #compliance #training #healthandsafety #inspections

As part of our Customer Roadshow, we’re connecting with leading industrial and power companies across the North West and beyond, to hear about their plans to reduce carbon emissions and support the creation of clean jobs. Decarbonising industrial processes is critical to achieving the UK Government’s 2030 clean energy goals, with industry accounting for approximately 25% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. However, it’s a complex challenge that demands collaborative solutions. That’s why companies like Pilkington United Kingdom Limited and NGF Europe (NSG Group), both part of the NSG Group, are actively exploring opportunities to source low-carbon hydrogen from HyNet. Over the past few years, Pilkington UK has been excited about the potential of low-carbon hydrogen to support the production of low-carbon glass. As part of our visit the company explained why HyNet will play a pivotal role in reducing its reliance on fossil gas in Pilkington UK’s glass furnace, ultimately driving further progress in decarbonising its glass manufacturing processes. Neil Syder, Managing Director at Pilkington UK, said “Securing a reliable, cost-effective supply of hydrogen at our Greengate Works site will enable us to transition from producing low-carbon glass on a run-by-run basis to making it our standard manufacturing procedure. This marks a crucial step toward delivering carbon-free buildings by making low-carbon glass a more routine specification choice for architects and specifiers. “Joining the HyNet network in the North West unlocks the potential to permanently remove thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions from our production annually, representing significant progress toward meeting our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-certified goals for carbon neutrality. “This initiative also aligns with our vision to makechange™ by transforming our processes and delivering low-carbon building products that will accelerate the decarbonisation of the built environment.” Iain Ferguson, Operations Manager at NGF Europe, said "NGF Europe Ltd welcomes the progress being made by the HyNet partners to further develop the supply of vital low carbon hydrogen to North West industry. Although we have significantly reduced our carbon emissions through energy efficiency projects, we see the use of low-carbon hydrogen as being the vital next-step in maintaining glass-fibre manufacturing in the North-West" We’re proud to support the NSG Group in its efforts to remove carbon from industry and leverage hydrogen as a clean energy solution to power glass production right here in the North West. #CustomerRoadshow #hydrogen #H2ready #hydrogeneconomy #customers #collaboration #FromAmbitionToAction #PeopleProductPlace Cadent Gas Limited Storengy - ENGIE

Today I had the pleasure of spending time with Cadent Gas Limited’s HyNet colleagues Progressive Energy, Viridor and Pilkington United Kingdom Limited and sharing our vision for a decarbonised North West with Ofgem and the Low Carbon Contracts Company. Pilkington plans to use hydrogen to create low carbon glass and Viridor will be one of first to capture CO2 from their processes. This is CO2 reduction on a massive scale and providing industry with a route to decarbonise and grow. Looking forward to working with government over the coming months as the various business models for hydrogen transport and storage are progressed.
