The violent racism and Islamophobia that has spilled across UK streets in recent weeks, has no place in our society. We borrow from the words of the Runnymede Trust for racial justice in stating that such violent racism has long been simmering under the surface. What is happening is the direct result of years of normalising racism and anti-migrant rhetoric that has been enabled by politicians, British media and social media platforms. We are a women-lead group of sisters, aunties and carers who in our personal and work lives, mother and support in traditional and in non-traditional ways. We can not begin to imagine the depth of anguish and grief felt by families whose daughters were killed in Stockport and whose children are critically injured. That their pain and grief should be met with violence, racism and hatred, is grotesque. In the past week we’ve seen people attacked, and buildings sabotaged. Institutes and industry media are failing to respond to what is unfolding, giving attention still to planning application disputes and design awards - rather than turning attention to the destruction of mosques, community centres and arson attacks on buildings in which women, men and children are living. Every single one of us must speak out against Islamophobia and racism, in every industry. Architects, designers and place-makers must be part of the anti-racist movement and should be offering our utmost solidarity to people of colour, minority and under-represented groups and Muslim communities. Disappointingly, industry institutes and foundations are remaining silent. As designers we have an ethical duty of care to support the communities who we serve. More than ever we must use our skills to support those who suffer greatest repression and marginalisation. Our industry far too often pays attention to work and people who are in positions of comfort, and in positions of power. We connect the dots between these attacks in the UK, global violence’s and state violence being perpetrated against people of colour and repressed people. Whilst we are dismayed by media outlets and politicians downplaying these events and using language that gives credence to white suprematist attacks, we are inspired by the communities who are coming together in towns and in cities in peace, in solidarity and in many instances putting their bodies on the line in defiance against threats. Part W calls on all those in the built environment sector to call out discrimination, hatred and racialised rhetoric at all levels. We extend our unwavering solidarity to refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and communities of colour during this difficult time. We call upon our colleagues, fellow workers and institutions to do the same. #solidarity #antiracist #support #UseYourVoice #SpeakOut #CitiesOfPeace #CitiesOfSanctury #AgainstHate #RefugeesWelcomeHere #AsylumSeekersWelcome #MigrantsWelcome

In a world where women, girls, children, people of colour, people of diverse backgrounds and faiths are being targeted right now in ways that are utterly barbaric, we continue to work towards true equity. To ensure all people are able to live safely, in freedom - and that the design of cities is supportive of that freedom. We are conscious of how painful it is - indeed how impossible it is - for any of us to ‘carry on as normal’, when right now unconscionable atrocities are being enacted on innocent civilians in Palestine, in Sudan, Ukraine and other areas of conflict. What we are seeing happening is horrific. The life of every person, of every gender, is of value. On the 12th June as part of the London Festival of Architecture we will gather, to give a platform to people working in the sector who in different ways centre ethics, social justice, gender equity and equitable place-making at the heart of what they do. Tickets - here https://lnkd.in/ezBu2Qgc Join us! Bring your solidarity, open hearts, commitment to decolonisation, desire for gender equity for all, your desire for local and global justice - and bring your appetite to be actively part of that change. #LFAat20 #Reimagine #ReimagineWomensWork #architecture #globalequity #citiesforall #peace #decolonisation #feminism
