We've got news 🙌🏾 Introducing our new AI-powered Media Bias Checker: Helping You Consume and Create Better Stories! We’re excited to introduce our Media Bias Checker - an AI-powered tool to challenge harmful media narratives about Black people and empower others to do the same! Building on the success of our 2020 Media Reporting Tool, this innovation uses AI to detect anti-Black bias and negative tropes in articles. Simply input an article and the tool will analyse it in seconds, making it easier to hold publishers to account. This groundbreaking tool also enables users to review their own writing to avoid unintentionally using negative stereotypes or unconscious bias. By acting as both a detection and learning resource, it will help us all create fairer stories and more empowering narratives. The tool is currently only available to a select group of users. Please get in touch if you’d like to be among the first to know when it’s released more widely.

About us
Our Version Media® CIC is a mission-led, community media enterprise dedicated to increasing positive and authentic representation of black and marginalised communities. We were founded in 2019 by Southampton-born broadcast journalist and community activist, Veronica Gordon, after seeing the harm that the media’s persistent demonisation of these groups was having on people’s wellbeing and life chances. She combined her fifteen years’ journalism expertise with her fifteen years community activism to create Our Version Media. With our motto “Our Voices, Our Stories”, Our Version Media equips people with digital media skills to tell and share their own stories. Our Mobile Storytelling workshops - based on the principles of mobile journalism - teaches everyone from teenagers to pensioners how to create, film and edit impactful stories using a smartphone. Our work is amplifying marginalised voices, empowering people to advocate for themselves and up-skilling people with digital media skills to shine a spotlight on their lives, cultures, diversity and resilience. This is boosting self-esteem and confidence, while tackling negative stereotypes at the same time.

If you haven’t met Wumi yet, she’s our awesome new Business Development Assistant intern! She joined us in September from the University of Southampton and is a great addition to the team. She and our founder, Veronica, went to BBC Radio Solent to chat about our upcoming “Reclaiming Narratives” Black Stories Screening. Wumi is one of the local people taking part, whose story will be shared on the big screen. It’s THIS Thursday btw - at MAST Mayflower Studios so we hope you’ve got your ticket! Get it here if you haven’t: https://lnkd.in/eva_5kQf Then, join us on Thursday to find out more about Wumi. Watch her’s and other real-life stories, that will each tackle a negative Black narrative. There is the SWEETEST exhibition at MAST Mayflower Studios right now. It’s old family photos from Southampton’s Windrush community. It’s so beautiful that some say it brought tears to their eyes and had their hearts overflowing with love. This lovely couple is our founder’s parents. They were teenagers in their photo. They’ve been married for 49 years. They came to Southampton when they were just children. Him from Jamaica. Her from Trinidad. They met, fell in love, and got married right here in Southampton. Theirs is just one of the photos on display. If you’re coming to our “Reclaiming Narratives” event on Thursday (31st), take the time to view this heartwarming exhibition while you’re here. Or pop into MAST anytime. Have you seen it yet? If yes, what did you think?

The theme for this year’s Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives” something we do every day, all year round, here at Our Version Media. It’s something we’ve been doing since we were founded in 2019. Come and experience our impact at our annual BHM event, where we showcase real-life stories, made by real people. This awesome group has just learned the art of creating, filming and editing personal stories - all using their smartphone. Now they’re putting their new skills to the test by creating the mobile videos for our “Reclaiming Narratives” Black Stories screening. Each story will challenge a negative Black narrative head-on.
