About us
Current Future Generations Commissioner for Wales: Derek Walker The Commissioner's role is to be the guardian of future generations. This means helping public bodies and those who make policy in Wales to think about the long-term impact their decisions have. The Well-being of Future Generations Act requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions, to work better with people, communities and each other, and to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change. The general duties of the Commissioner : “Promote the sustainable development principle, in particular to act as a guardian of the ability of future generations to meet their needs and encourage public bodies to take greater account of the long-term impact of the things they do.” “Monitor and assess the extent to which well-being objectives set by public bodies are being met.”

Ready to see how Wales is leading the way for a sustainable future? 🌎 The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 is a pioneering policy that centres the well-being of future generations in public decision-making in Wales. It mandates public bodies to consider long-term impacts, advancing economic, social, environmental, and cultural sustainability. With legal accountability and a whole-system approach involving community engagement, the Act positions Wales as a global leader in sustainable development aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 🏆 The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 – World Future Policy Award Winner 2024! Very impressed by the work of Torfaen County Borough Council under the Marmot region. They are redesigning services to enable prevention and a community approach. Also had the honour of meeting Sir Michael Marmot, hopefully we'll work together to create a Marmot Cymru model aligned with the Well-being of Future Generations Act. 21.1% of people in Wales are disabled. Today we mark the UN's #InternationalDayofPersonwithDisabilities to amplify the rights of disabled people. Wales has adopted the social model of disability - a model that views disability as a result of societal barriers, rather than a person's impairment or difference. Learn more about the model here: https://lnkd.in/eJkCR4Ue In 2022-23 one in four (25%) disabled people lived in a household in material deprivation. This is more than twice as high as for people who are not disabled (11%). The Well-being of Wales report here highlights more findings here: https://lnkd.in/ebiuBGaU A Wales where the rights of disabled people are fully met, is a vision central to #CymruCan.

Mae 21.1% o bobl Cymru yn anabl. #DiwrnodRhyngwladolPobolAgAnableddau Heddiw rydym yn nodi Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Pobl ag Anableddau'r Cenhedloedd Unedig i ehangu hawliau pobl anabl. Mae Cymru wedi mabwysiadu’r model cymdeithasol o anabledd – model sy’n ystyried anabledd o ganlyniad i rwystrau cymdeithasol, yn hytrach na nam neu wahaniaeth person. Dysgwch fwy am y model yma: https://lnkd.in/eU5PBN6W Yn 2022-23 roedd un o bob pedwar (25%) o bobl anabl yn byw ar aelwyd mewn amddifadedd materol. Mae hyn fwy na dwywaith yn uwch nag ar gyfer pobl nad ydynt yn anabl (11%). Mae adroddiad Llesiant Cymru yma yn tynnu sylw at ragor o ganfyddiadau yma: https://lnkd.in/ef8YMUdk Mae Cymru lle mae hawliau pobl anabl yn cael eu bodloni’n llawn, yn weledigaeth sy’n ganolog i #CymruCan.
