Respiratory Infections: A Hidden Cost to Employers and the Economy Short-term respiratory infections—like influenza, COVID-19 and RSV – have a significant impact on employees, businesses, and the broader economy which can’t be ignored. Key Findings 🔹Workforce Impact: When suffering a respiratory infection, employees are impacted for over an entire working week, with presenteeism (working while ill) playing an even larger role than absenteeism (days off sick) in terms of lost productivity. 🔹 Economic Cost: The average employer incurs £852 in productivity losses per employee each year, amounting to £44 billion nationally. 🔹Disparities: Impact varies across the workforce and industries, with face-to-face sectors and women disproportionately affected. Proposed Reforms 🔹 Prevention: Investments in prevention, including vaccines, could yield big returns for businesses. 🔹 Health Equity: Address gender disparities through targeted workplace health initiatives. 🔹 Policy Support: Encourage employer-led health initiatives via tax incentives and occupational health resources. The Outlook By prioritising prevention like vaccination and promoting healthier workplaces, businesses can boost productivity, retain talent, and drive economic growth. What should the NHS look like in 10 years? The future of healthcare in the UK depends on how we plan today. OHE contributed to the Department of Health & Social Care’s consultation on the next 10-Year Health Plan. Here are three critical priorities we outlined: Prevention as a Priority 🔹 Prevention is 3-4 times more cost-effective than treatment. For example, the socioeconomic burden of cervical cancer costs the UK £406M annually—investment in prevention could save lives and resources. 🔹 Expanding prevention budgets and prioritising long-term health benefits over short-term costs is crucial to addressing rising healthcare demands. Innovative Financing Models 🔹 There is a significant opportunity for the UK to be a world leader in innovative financing in healthcare, informed by health economics tools. 🔹 Innovative financing could also benefit the UK’s focus on prevention – with a dedicated prevention fund, similar to those available for cancer or innovative medicines, for example. Incorporating patient voices in decision making 🔹 In our research, we’ve found that incorporating patient voices in HTA has wide-ranging benefits for both patients and industry 🔹 Accounting for societal preferences allows HTA processes to better balance efficiency with equity (ie: what’s fair for society). The next 10-Year Health Plan must view health as a long-term societal investment, acknowledging the interconnected challenges of poverty, climate change, and inequity. Incorporating patient voices and cross-government collaboration will ensure a healthcare system that meets the needs of today while preparing for tomorrow.
