Demand for ‘blue foods’ is expected to double by 2050, from 2015 levels, and aquaculture will drive fish production, accounting for 106 million metric tonnes in 2030, a rise of 32% from 2020 levels, according to the FAO. From an investment perspective, the global aquaculture market size was valued at $264 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $401 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.37%. The consumption of a protein-rich diet will increase spending and adoption of cutting-edge technologies, such as machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), automatic feeders, and acoustic telemetry tracking systems by aquaculture farm owners, and is behind the recent Ocean 14 Capital Fund investment in aquaManager. #bluefoods #aquaculture #privateequity #impactinvesting #blueeconomy #sdg14 #oceaneconomy #fishproduction

As the year draws to a close, the team at Ocean 14 Capital is delighted to announce the Ocean 14 Capital Fund 1's latest investment in KIME Akva AS to drive growth of farmed cod as a sustainable supplement to wild fishery. The investment is the latest allocation to Fund 1 that reached its hard close earlier this year https://lnkd.in/ez9PBn-R. Catches of Atlantic cod fell by 42% in last eight years, but with around a fifth of the global catch, Norway is still one of the largest producers and exporters of cod. Read below to find out more about how founder Ørjan Jensen has, over time, built a solution to the reduction of wild cod fishing through incrementally decreasing quotas. #aquaculture #codfarming #fishing #norway #atlanticcod #sustainablefishing #fishfarming #impactinvesting #privateequity #sdg14

Private equity #impactinvestment fund Ocean 14 Capital has announced a strategic investment in Norwegian #cod #farmer KIME Akva AS. 💬 “We are excited to partner with the strong team at KIME to provide a sustainable, high-quality supplement to wild cod, stocks of which are under pressure for a variety of reasons,” said Max Holtzman, Principal at Ocean 14 Capital, the Fund’s adviser. 💬 “What started as a side-project to my father’s #fishing company, has over time become a real solution to the reduction of wild #codfishing through incrementally decreasing #quotas... We are excited to be working with the impact team at the Ocean 14 Capital Fund, as our aim is to lead the development of the sector by working with them to investigate adopting Zero #FFDR and test #regenerative waste production models,” said Ørjan Jensen, CEO of KIME Akva. ✨ Read more details here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dQVQDzTW

Our monthly newsletter is taking a new direction. We will have our featured article and focus on a key development relating to each of our four themes: Ocean Sustainability; Aquaculture; Carbon Capture & Sensors; and Emerging Preservation Technology. This month's feature focuses on the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. It centred on new carbon market rules under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and a global finance target of $300 billion annually for developing nations by 2035, contributing to a broader $1.3 trillion goal. Read the full article on our website: https://lnkd.in/d-6gS-MP. This month's stat of the month (see infographic below) is about plastic pollution. A UN coalition led by Norway warns that the world will struggle to manage plastic waste within a decade without significant curbs on production. Speaking ahead of the fifth and decisive session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) in Busan, South Korea, Norway's Anne Beathe Kristiansen Tvinnereim emphasised the urgency of addressing plastic pollution across its entire lifecycle. Global plastic use and waste are projected to triple by 2060, with less than 20% recycled and half destined for landfills. INC-5, running from 25 November to 1 December, aims to finalise a historic legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution, using the Chair's Non-Paper 3 as a foundation. Highlights from our 4 key themes: Sustainability: Protecting oceans offers extra benefit to avoid whale collisions with ships: A recent study highlights that safeguarding just 2.6% of the ocean's surface could significantly reduce deadly whale-ship collisions. Aquaculture: Forecasting seafood safety using modelling from winter SSTs to predict summer shellfish toxins. A study focused on Scottish and Shetland aquaculture regions found that colder winter and spring temperatures signal higher risks of harmful algal blooms, which produce toxins that accumulate in shellfish. Carbon Capture: Mapping seabed carbon reveals new insights into marine conservation: Two new studies in Canada and the UK reveal the vast carbon storage potential of seabed sediments, highlighting their critical role in mitigating climate change. Technology: German startup pioneers safer, scalable protein production using CO2. German biotech startup b.fab is developing a revolutionary method to convert CO2 into protein for aquafeeds, using renewable electricity and liquid feedstock. Saving the ocean - not just good for biodiversity, for habitat, for global food security and climate stability - but good for human health and wellbeing too! A new paper has found that state of our oceans is intrinsically linked to human health, and that in most cases, "investing in marine protected areas directly benefits the health and livelihoods of people who live near them." ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ebQ-N2Mt #oceanhealth #humanhealth #oneocean #oceanconservation #oceanprotection Blue Marine Foundation
