Quebec's impressive aquaculture potential 🐟
Rainbow trout aquaculture is a booming industry worldwide. Countries such as the United States, France, Italy, Denmark, Finland and Norway are world leaders in rainbow trout production, together producing over 150,000 tonnes annually.
By comparison, in Quebec, current total production is less than 1,200 tonnes, and only 500 tonnes are produced annually for consumption.
Yet Quebec has immense potential for rainbow trout production. In fact, we have ideal conditions for aquaculture.
We have :
1) Abundant High-Quality Water Resources: Quebec has an abundance of freshwater resources, including lakes, rivers, and streams that provide clean, high-quality water essential for aquaculture.
2) Renewable Energy Access: The province benefits from access to renewable energy sources, such as hydroelectric power, which helps in maintaining sustainable and energy-efficient aquaculture operations.
3) Vast Territory: Quebec’s large geographic area offers ample space for the development of aquaculture facilities, allowing for the establishment of both small and large-scale operations.
4) Proximity to Major Markets: Quebec is geographically close to significant markets, including the United States, which is one of the largest seafood consumers in the world. This proximity reduces transportation costs and times, making it easier to supply fresh products.
5) Growing Demand for Local and Sustainable Products: There is an increasing consumer demand for locally produced, sustainable aquaculture products. Quebec’s focus on sustainable practices aligns well with this market trend.
6) Favorable Climate: The climate in Quebec is conducive to the growth of rainbow trout, as they thrive in cooler, temperate waters. This helps in maintaining optimal conditions for fish growth and health.
These assets make our province an ideal location for developing this industry in a responsible and sustainable manner.
In comparison, Ontario is Canada's largest rainbow trout producer, with an annual output of 6,000 tonnes, representing almost two-thirds of Canadian production. A whopping 3,000 tonnes of their production is sold and consumed in Quebec. What's more, Ontario has just implemented a multifaceted growth strategy to triple its production over the next 5 years.
This growth potential should be a blueprint for Quebec, where we also have the resources to develop our aquaculture industry significantly. That's why Nayad Aquaculture's La Tuque project is so timely!
