As the NHS enters another busy winter we look at how a prediction model developed with NIHR funding can help healthcare services prevent falls among older people and reduce pressure on the NHS. The eFalls calculator uses existing NHS electronic patient record data to automatically identify people at risk of hospitalisation or A&E attendance after a fall over the next 12 months. This means: 🚑People can be proactively referred to specialist falls prevention services for assessments 🚑And be provided with interventions to prevent falls taking place. The researchers are now piloting eFalls with a healthcare partnership and hope it can be adopted across the NHS. The study was funded by NIHR's Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme. 🧠 Can brain training improve thinking skills in older adults? Researchers invited over 6,500 people aged 50+ to take part in brain training activities. Half did brain training for 3 minutes every day; half completed fake exercises. After 6 weeks, those who did brain training saw improvements in: 💭 thinking and problem-solving 📅 memory 💡 attention The improvements were small, but any improvement in older people’s brain health could have a big impact at the population level, the researchers say. 🔗 Read more about this study: https://lnkd.in/epDkWvBH
