Celebrate✨Inform ✨Inspire✨we picked up the baton from First 100 Years to continue to advance women in the law in the UK
About us
We are proud to continue the work of the www.First100Years.org.uk national campaign. The First 100 Years is a truly ground-breaking project charting and celebrating the journey of women in the legal profession. It is the UK's first digital museum dedicated to women in law. Launched in 2014, the five-year project began with the aim of creating an online library of 100 stories about women who have shaped the legal profession since the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 paved the way for women to become lawyers to present day. As support from all corners of the profession has grown, The First 100 Years has blossomed into an absolute celebration of women’s role in the profession, with an extensive programme of activities and events planned in the run-up to the centenary of the Act in 2019. Its legacy will be a deep understanding of the past combined with a celebration of today so as to ensure a strong, and equal, future for all women in the profession. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAKOR5CzCDg

Great to read this from our 10th anniversary patron Susanna McGibbon 👏👏👏
🖊️ In a new guest blog, Treasury Solicitor Susanna McGibbon reflects on the past year and the changes the GLD has been through. She writes: “The word for 2024 could be ‘change’ – as civil servants we have had a ringside seat to some of the most important democratic moments and I am very proud of the way government lawyers responded to the change in government, providing expert advice to incoming ministers.” Read the blog ⬇️ https://bit.ly/4ghfLO9

📋 In collaboration with She Breaks the Law and Next 100 Years: Women In Law, we have launched a follow-on survey to further explore the #AI gender gap in the legal industry. We're seeking to gain insights into the experiences, workplace dynamics, and AI interactions of legal professionals from a gender perspective. Our goal is to utilise these findings to better understand the challenges and opportunities in this domain and to offer valuable recommendations. 🔎 We encourage all legal professionals to contribute to this important research by sharing their experiences in our survey: https://lnkd.in/dDVjUrV7 Your input is invaluable as we continue to explore this topic!
👩💻 How are women in law using AI? We’ve collaborated with She Breaks the Law and Next 100 Years: Women In Law to publish the findings of a first-of-its-kind industry survey exploring how women in #law perceive, and are currently experiencing, the impacts of #AI. With 77% of respondents saying that AI is having an ‘extremely significant’ impact on the profession, but only 31% of respondents feeling only ‘somewhat informed’, we’ve also provided suggestions for women working in law and recommendations for organisations to close the #gender gap. 💬 Shilpa Bhandarkar, commented: “The findings from the survey underline the genuine risk that AI could further deepen the gender divide. However, each of us has the ability to influence the outcome: whether by actively using technology to expose and challenge ingrained biases, giving our teams the time and space to experiment and learn, or by choosing vendors who share our values. If we champion these efforts collectively, we could reverse the path we’re currently on and instead accelerate the progress toward gender equality in law.” Click here to read our ‘No Woman Left Behind: Closing the AI Gender Gap in Law’ Report 👉 https://lnkd.in/dzhs2VuX

📣📣📣 Make sure you make your voices heard!
It's Survey #2 time! Hot on the heels of our Women in AI event with Next 100 Years: Women In Law and Linklaters, we are conducting our next survey to explore the experiences, work environments, and AI interactions of legal professionals through a gender lens. This one is going deeper and is focussing on practicing lawyers and how they are using AI in their day to day jobs. It has been designed to be quick and neat and will take you no more than five mins. https://lnkd.in/gDPheYMV Please complete and share far and wide so we can continue to explore this important topic and create more spaces to come together and work on action to ensure that women are not left behind, as AI continues to transform the world. Taking this opportunity to wish every single lawbreaker a peaceful, restful end of 2024 and all the very best for 2025. #WomenInAI

📣 new episode from our youngest project 📣
🎄 last episode of 2024 has dropped! Alma-Constance & Lucinda Acland welcomed barrister Flora Page to talk all things **inquiries** After a major tragedy, public inquiries look at what happened, why it happened, and who is to blame, and what could be done to prevent this happening again. One of the most notorious is the Post Office Horizon IT inquiry, where many innocent people were falsely accused of crimes. Alma-C and Lucinda spoke to Flora Page, as she recently represented the sub postmasters in the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry, which concluded this week She told us: ❗️Why inquiries are so important when there has been a major tragedy ❗️How they ensure organisations are held accountable for their actions ❗️Her role in the post office horizon IT Inquiry and why lawyers are involved? ❗️How the voices of children and young people can be heard in an Inquiry Thank you Flora for being our guest 🙏 Tune in, share with your friends and get in touch! Today marks 102 years since Carrie Morrison shattered the glass ceiling and became the first female solicitor in England and Wales on December 18th, 1923. 🎉👩⚖️ Born on February 3, 1888, in Richmond, Surrey, Morrison overcame numerous obstacles to pave the way for women in the legal profession. Despite the challenges of her time, including being denied a degree simply because she was a woman, Morrison's determination never wavered. She eventually graduated from Girton College, Cambridge, with First Class Honours in Modern and Medieval Languages. Morrison's journey to becoming a solicitor was not straightforward. From teaching to working with MI5 and finally taking her articles after the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act of 1919, her story is one of resilience and breaking barriers. 🌟 In 1922, alongside Mary Pickup, Mary Sykes, and Maud Crofts, Morrison became one of the first women to qualify as a solicitor in England. As the first woman admitted to the role, she set a high standard of dedication and determination, providing pro bono services to those in need and advocating for social justice. Her legacy is evident today, with over 52% of qualified solicitors in England being women. Carrie Morrison truly was a trailblazer, and her contributions to the legal field continue to inspire generations of women. 💪⚖️ Let’s honour her memory and continue striving for equality and justice in all professions. 🌟 #Trailblazer #WomenInLaw #LegalHistory #CarrieMorrison #Equality #Inspiration #LegalPioneer #HerStory #WomenEmpowerment #LegalProfession #BreakingBarriers #FemaleSolicitors #GenderEquality
