From the depths of the Boulby Mine to the roadways, salt plays a key role in keeping you safe on the roads this winter! 🚛❄️ Extracted from 1,500 feet underground, we store 280,000 tonnes of salt in our salt barns, ready to be spread 🌍💎 With 530+ gritters at 128 depots, we work to ensure that the salt has been spread onto the road surface before the temperature drops below 0°C to minimise the risk of frost or ice forming, ensuring the roads are safe 🌨️ Spreading salt doesn’t stop snow from settling, but it creates a debonding layer that helps plough snow off roads more easily, reducing the risk of collisions and helping you to have a safe journey. You can help keep safe in severe weather by ensuring you are prepared for your journey. We've delivered the UK's lowest carbon resurfacing scheme on our network, thanks to a cutting-edge trial on the A64! Together with Tarmac and other partners, we reduced carbon emissions on the project by 75% compared to traditional maintenance of projects on a similar scale. The reduction was achieved by using: ➡️ low carbon materials ➡️ electric transportation ➡️ sustainable manufacturing techniques

MP for Chester North and Neston, Samantha Dixon, visited the A550 at Two Mills near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire to see the safety enhancements we’ve delivered to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers. The visit comes ahead of completion of our £4.5 million project, which aims to reduce the number of people harmed on this key route. These new safety enhancement include: - Replacement of existing speed cameras to encourage drivers to comply with the existing 50mph speed limit - Renewal of road signs along the route - New footways to improve public right of way for pedestrian access - New roadside safety barriers - Improved lighting featuring energy-saving, carbon-reducing LED bulbs - Installation of new vehicle activated signs This route builds on a previous £1 million project completed in 2018 that focused on improving pedestrian and cyclist safety at the A540 and A550 junction at Two Mills.

We've signed a landmark agreement with Natural England to help achieve our 2050 vision of a connected country that also conserves the natural environment around our roads. Where better to sign it, than on our A417 landscape-led scheme which will include the largest green bridge in the country and two planted dual-use crossings. The project also uses recycled materials and has dedicated bat underpasses, bird fencing and much more! ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ekK2kvZG

🎖️Our Award-winning Roads Academy Leads the Way into 2025🎖️ From reaching 500+ leaders from 90 diverse organisations in our community to achieving victories at industry awards ceremonies (winning the “Developing the Next Generation of Collaborative Leaders” award at the ICW Awards and being highly commended in the “Training Provider of the Year” category at the CMI Awards), it’s been a tremendous year for Roads Academy. There has been a lot to celebrate, and what better way to close out the year than through the annual Graduation ceremony. The event focused on celebrating the success of our Class of 2024 graduates and showcasing the impact which past and present Roads Academy leaders are having on the sector. We were pleased to welcome back Nick Harris (National Highways’ Chief Executive Officer) who shared his perspectives on the importance of leadership in shaping our sector. David O'Neil National Highways’ Supply Chain Director and Roads Academy Leader) spotlighted the successes of the programmes and hosted a panel which consisted of Roads Academy graduates who shared their compelling Roads Academy experiences and how they are applying their learnings on the ground. A massive thank you to Nicole Preston MSc IEng MICE, Renata BM Eglinton, Steph Smith and George Woollard for participating and being excellent panellists. Congratulations again to our Class of 2024 graduates and a huge thank you to everyone who helps to make Roads Academy the success that it is, from our Federated Advisory Board and Roads Academy Delivery Team to all of our supplier organisations across the sector. Our purpose is to continue to develop our leadership capability of current and future leaders, and we look forward to continuing this in 2025. We are already looking towards 2025 and filling the remaining spaces for our February intakes for both programmes. Work is progressing at pace on the new road improvements near Junction 10 of the M27 and on the A32, north of Fareham. If you are travelling to Southampton or Portsmouth, you can see the scheme starting to take shape. Once finished, the upgrades will enable the growth of the Welborne Garden Village development, which is bringing up to 6,000 new homes alongside jobs to Hampshire. Councillor Nick Adams-King, Leader of Hampshire County Council joined Cabinet colleagues, Councillor Lulu Bowerman and Councillor Kirsty North and representatives from Fareham Borough Council, Buckland Development Limited and National Highways to see how this complex civil engineering project is progressing. We understand that any inconvenience to your journeys is frustrating, and we are working hard to keep disruptions to a minimum over the duration of the scheme.
