On 17/04, I attended the ‘Unleashing Potential: BT Group x The Black Apprentice Network (BAN) Virtual Launch’ which included Rubin, Elijah, Sophie, Faidah, Joanna, Esmeralda, Zara, Ian and Lamar. One of my various key takeaway from this event is that a major aim is to ‘create a level playing field for all aspiring apprenticeship’. I admire the BT apprenticeship team since they focus more on ‘nurturing talent and pushing you onto the greatness you will achieve’. I learnt that you should be yourself, you shouldn’t try to be someone that you’re not and it’s also important to neither over nor undersell yourself. ‘Everyone has the capacity to be a strong apprentice if they demonstrate their skills’. It’s also important to genuinely have an interest in the company which you are willing to work with. This is something that is better to evaluate before your admission, to prevent you from finding out your values don’t correspond with the company when you’ve already started working there, or in case you don’t enjoy the work culture at that specific company.

Constantly reminding ourselves that going to college is not the same as a successful post-secondary outcome. In many cases, college can be the right next step after high school... but not all programs have positive returns on investment, and many fail to graduate even half who enroll. Most high school students state they wish their schools helped them learn more about high-quality alternatives to college. Apprenticeship programs, trade schools, and workforce development programs can all develop career-focused skill sets effectively when students are matched with the right fit. Some great programs outside of 4-year degrees creating quality options at all stages include ActivateWork AdvanceEDU CrossPurpose Merit America, Year Up At Willow, we connect students with all quality options that align with their interests and strengths.
